Junior Research Assistant

An exciting opportunity is currently available for a Junior Research Assistant to join the Centre for Cancer Research at Hudson Institute of Medical Research, Australia's leading Medical Research Institute:

The Junior Research Assistant will contribute to the Childhood and Adolescent Solid Tumour Living Biobank within the Childhood Cancer Program. This role involves developing and validating novel preclinical cancer models (cell culture and mouse models), with a focus on childhood and adolescent sarcomas.

The Junior Research Assistant will report to the Laboratory Head and maintain close working relationships with staff, students, and clinicians across the Developmental and Cancer Biology laboratory team.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The role will suit someone who is:

· Interested in cancer biology with a willingness to work with animal models of disease

· Skilled in sterile techniques and cell culture, with strong attention to detail

· Organised, proactive, and able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team

· A clear and confident communicator, both written and verbal

Qualifications desired:

Required:

· Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field

· Experience in sterile cell culture techniques

· Familiarity with standard laboratory practices and safety procedures

· Strong problem-solving, organisation, and documentation skills

Preferred:

· Experience working with PDX models or other in vivo cancer models

· Previous exposure to tumour tissue processing, dissection, and histology

· Knowledge of molecular biology techniques (e.g. DNA/RNA extraction, Western blot, flow cytometry)

· Certification or training in animal handling and care

Your responsibilities include:

· Setting up and performing routine experiments according to protocols

· Preparing specimens and managing laboratory supplies and stock

· Performing sterile cell culture, maintaining and cryopreserving cell lines, and conducting basic cell-based experiments

· Supporting preclinical cancer models, including assisting with PDX tumour implantation, monitoring, and harvesting under supervision and approved protocols

· Processing tumour tissues for downstream applications and maintaining accurate biobank inventories

· Performing data entry and maintaining detailed, organised electronic lab records

· Contributing to laboratory organisation, compliance with biosafety and animal care regulations, and shared team responsibilities

EMPLOYMENT TERMS

This position is a fixed term contract role in a full time capacity. Salary is based on Research Support Staff, RSS X dependent on level of experience. Superannuation of 12% and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
