The Census Field Recruitment Team is responsible for the attraction, selection, and engagement of more than 30,000 field staff across Australia, including metropolitan, regional, and remote areas. To lead this major initiative, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is recruiting one Recruitment Metrics and Systems Manager and two Recruitment Metrics and Systems Officers.
These are temporary positions commencing November/December 2025. The Manager position is available until December 2026; the other positions until July 2026, with a possibility of extension
About the roles
As a Recruitment Metrics and Systems Manager or Officer, you will play an important role in enabling data-informed recruitment decisions across the organisation. You will lead or contribute to the design, development and maintenance of recruitment dashboards and reporting tools that provide visibility of key recruitment metrics, highlight emerging risks and support proactive attraction efforts.
You will work closely with the recruitment operations team, technology partners and the recruitment system product owner to ensure the recruitment solution is fit-for-purpose, user-friendly and aligned with strategic goals.
Responsibilities of both roles:
Data & Reporting
- Design and maintain recruitment dashboards and reporting tools to provide visibility into key metrics and trends.
- Monitor recruitment data to identify risks, bottlenecks, and talent pipeline issues.
- Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and consistency across recruitment reports.
- Support strategic and operational decision-making through data insights and reporting solutions.
Systems & Tools
- Collaborate with system owners and technology teams to enhance recruitment system functionality and resolve issues.
- Provide first-line support and training to recruitment staff and stakeholders on system usage.
- Maintain documentation such as standard operating procedures and user guides.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with recruitment managers to align metrics with business needs and support recruitment performance monitoring.
- Build strong relationships with internal teams including HR, IT, and operations to ensure integrated recruitment solutions.
Process Improvement & Strategy
- Contribute to recruitment strategy, policy development, and process improvements.
- Identify opportunities to improve recruitment procedures for scalability and effectiveness.
The APS 6 Recruitment Metrics & Systems Manager role will have more of a strategic focus and a greater responsibility for managing staff in the team and relationships with stakeholders.
What we are looking for
The successful candidates should be able to demonstrate most of the following:
APS 6 Recruitment Metrics & Systems Manager
- Demonstrated experience in designing and maintaining dashboards and reporting tools.
- Proven ability to analyse complex data, identify trends and risks, and translate insights into practical recruitment solutions.
- Experience working with HR or recruitment systems, with the ability to troubleshoot issues and support end users.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence, coach, and support others.
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking capabilities, with sound judgment in providing advice and making decisions.
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, operational environment while maintaining attention to detail.
- Cultural capability to engage respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and applying inclusive and culturally appropriate communication.
APS 5 Recruitment Metrics & Systems Officer
- Ability to interpret and present data clearly to support decision-making and identify trends or issues.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to explain technical information in a user-friendly way.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute to shared goals.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- A proactive and solutions-focused mindset, with a commitment to continuous improvement.
