The POW Vascular Institute (POW-VI) is the research arm of the Department of Vascular Surgery, Prince of Wales Hospital, a large tertiary institution located in Sydney’s East. The POWVI conducts world-class medical research that is rooted in and driven by the needs of the local community and wider Australia.

The Institute is the pre-eminent vascular surgical research institute in New South Wales. It is home to 4 vascular surgeons and their practice staff, all committed to the vision of transforming health outcomes, both locally and globally. Due to its unique location, it serves patients from the Prince of Wales Public and Private Hospitals, Sydney Children’s Hospital and the Royal Hospital for Women. The vascular surgeons have strong links with UNSW, with academic conjoint status, teaching appointments and research collaborations on the Randwick campus.

The POW-VI and the Department of Vascular Surgery undertakes research and clinical trials into improving outcomes and care for vascular surgery patients. These include conditions such as peripheral artery disease, aortic aneurysm, chronic venous insufficiency, and dialysis access. There are currently several ongoing research projects and clinical trials (Phase I-III) underway including investigator initiated and collaborative clinical trials group studies. Several new clinical trials are planned to launch before the end of the year. We are in a period of rapid growth and expect to expand the size of our research team significantly over the next 2-5 years.

About the Role:

The POW-VI and Department of Vascular Surgery are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Clinical Trials Coordinator to support the unit and assume responsibility for the day-to-day management of clinical trials at the Hospital. The position works as part of a small team and requires a comprehensive understanding of health service delivery, clinical research and the research regulatory environment. The role is dynamic, challenging and presents an opportunity to work with a highly engaged group of doctors. In this role, you will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the development of a leading Clinical Trials & Research Unit.

Key accountabilities include:
• Assuming responsibility for new and ongoing research studies and clinical trials
• Provide support for Department of Vascular Surgery Research meetings
• Preparation of ethics and governance applications
• Assist with the management of clinical trial patients’ appointments and schedules
• Maintain effective communication with external stakeholders such as CROs, sponsors and collaborative clinical trials groups.

Essential criteria:

The successful candidate will have:

Experience in a clinical research or clinical trials with prior exposure to the recruitment of patients and the collection and management of clinical trial data.

Experience working with busy clinicians and the ability to effectively manage workload within a fast paced, dynamic environment.

Tertiary qualification at a graduate level in a health or science discipline or equivalent research/trial experience.

Proven working knowledge of the clinical trial and research regulatory environment and processes as per ICH-GCP standards.

Demonstrated high level oral and written communication skills.

Demonstrated high level conceptual and analytical skills and the capacity to take initiative, problem solve and assist in ensuring the success of each project.

Demonstrated ability to plan and set goals whilst successfully managing competing priorities.

Proficiency in a range of computing skills including word processing, databases, and spreadsheets and their application in research.

The ability to demonstrate critical thinking, independent problem solving and organisational skills

Experience in clinical trial coordination or research project management

This role will be permanent, full time. We envisage this role as the foundational member of an expanding team with the potential to build and manage a team of research coordinators as we continue to rapidly grow.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a National Police Check and must be vaccinated according to NSW Health policy.
