At Lung Foundation Australia we are passionate about the work we do and the difference we make to the lives of Australians living with, or at risk of, lung disease and lung cancer.
Our values guide everything we do, and we are proud of our positive and inclusive workplace culture and supportive team environment.
The Media and Communications Specialist position is based in our Milton office.
About the role
Lung Foundation Australia is seeking a dynamic and strategic Media and Communications Specialist to elevate our national brand presence, build strong media relationships, and create compelling content that drives awareness, engagement, and support for our work.
This pivotal role is responsible for developing and executing Lung Foundation Australia’s annual media and communications plan. With a strong eye for newsworthy stories and an understanding of messaging and tone, you’ll lead media engagement and storytelling across campaigns, consumer services, research and fundraising initiatives.
You’ll also be the guardian of our organisational voice – producing engaging and insightful content for a range of channels including newsletters, magazines, blogs, social media, campaign materials and corporate reports. As the key liaison with journalists and media outlets, you’ll help shine a light on the lived experience of people impacted by lung disease and lung cancer – and amplify our impact in communities across Australia.
Key responsibilities include:
- Media Relations & Brand Awareness: Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, and tailor pitches for maximum impact. Coordinate proactive and reactive media opportunities, and drive coverage.
- Content Creation & Strategy: Lead the development of powerful stories and multimedia content across platforms including blogs, email, digital campaigns, magazines and publications.
- Campaigns & Brand Visibility: Work closely with Fundraising to create integrated campaigns that raise awareness and drive community participation.
- Corporate Communications: Write, edit and manage key organisational communications including our Annual Report, monthly newsletters, and biannual supporter magazine.
- Monitoring & Reporting: Track media performance, analyse communications impact, and adapt strategy to maximise outcomes.
About you
You’re a passionate storyteller, an experienced communicator, and someone who thrives in a values-driven, fast-paced environment. You have a deep understanding of media and public relations, with a track record of delivering content that informs, inspires and mobilises. You take a strategic and targeted approach to media engagement, focusing on the right messages, outlets and audiences, rather than taking a blanket approach to media distribution.
Essential skills and attributes include:
- Tertiary qualifications in journalism, public relations, communications, marketing or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in media, communications, or public relations, ideally within the non-profit or health sector.
- Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent storytelling ability, with experience translating complex health topics into accessible content.
- Experience managing content and editorial across web, print and digital platforms.
- Ability to respond to reactive media opportunities and work across departments to identify impactful case studies and spokespeople.
- Confidence acting as a media spokesperson and/or coaching others to speak with media.
- Strong digital literacy including Microsoft Office; familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce is advantageous.
- Excellent organisational and project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities.
- A collaborative mindset and ability to work cross-functionally within a team-oriented environment.
What we offer you!
At Lung Foundation Australia, we are proud of our reputation as a leading workplace, recognised with The Voice Project Best Workplace Award. We are committed to fostering a supportive and engaging environment for our teams.
Benefits include:
- Attractive salary packaging options - up to $15,900 per year in living expenses plus $2,650 per year in entertainment expenses.
- Hybrid work arrangements - mix of office and work from home.
- Additional leave including birthday leave, well-being leave and paid parental leave.
- Annual professional development allowance.
- Opportunities to participate in community events and volunteering.
- Rewards and Recognition program.
- Wellness program and social events.
- An Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
If you are ready to bring your enthusiasm and expertise to a role where your work matters, we’d love to hear from you.
