Our client is a federal government organisation with offices throughout Australia. Due to growth, they are seeking APS6 Data Scientist to join their team in Richmond or Geelong.

  • 12-month initial contract plus 12-month extension
  • Hybrid with 3 days per week onsite
  • Federal government role - Australian citizens can only apply

The role
The APS6 Data Scientist is a team leadership position within the client and will have delegated authority and responsibility to resolve issues and risks across a range of activities. The role is required to provide leadership, control, planning, resource management, performance management and decision making for the Team Membership within the work area.

The position has reasonable autonomy and accountability to exercise both initiative and judgment to interpret legislation and policy, in the application of practices and procedures to achieve outcomes within the functions.
The APS6 Data Scientist is required to provide detailed technical, professional, policy, operational support and advice in relation to complex problems. Where required, the role will coordinate and assist in the strategic planning, program and project management and policy development that support the clients' objectives.
The position will have a considerable level of contact with stakeholders and will be required to communicate with and provide advice on a range of matters to resolve moderately complex to complex enquiries.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Oversight and management of reporting, analysis and data management activities.
  • Managing, extracting, cleansing and preparing data from multiple sources, in particular the data warehouse, and advising on appropriate data checks for reasonableness
  • Management of updates to and development of regular performance monitoring.
  • Managing and assisting in designing statistical and mathematical modelling techniques to undertake analytical work on a range of tasks. This includes analyses, data tabulations, running Scheme projection models and cost benefit analyses.
  • Conducting deep dives, policy costings, and risk assessments to support various analytical tasks.
  • Managing ad hoc modelling requests and report production.
  • Communicating verbally and in writing to other staff and management the progress of work responsibilities and outcomes of work undertaken.
  • Managing the analysis of Scheme experience as an input in the assumption setting process for the Scheme projections and other cost analysis.
  • Developing, reviewing and presenting key analysis and insights, either written or verbal, tailored to the needs of stakeholders.
  • Overseeing the preparation of tables, charts and commentary for inclusion in the AFSR, QRDM, Board papers and other reporting
  • Supporting junior staff, including delegation and coaching.

To apply you will need the following skills and experience:
Essential Criteria:

  • Data analytics experience supporting government policy development, with some exposure to government processes (budget, legislation, policy development, briefs / documents)
  • Experience with internal and external stakeholder engagement and management, and demonstrated experience in team management
  • Proficient R or Python programming skills, with preference towards R, including data manipulation and analysis
  • Proficient SQL / SAS programming
  • Experience with management of work projects / supporting junior staff

Desirable criteria

  • Proficient understanding of statistical modelling techniques such as Generalised Linear Modelling, or tabular machine learning techniques such as gradient boosting, and how they are used in application
  • Experience in applying technical skills to solve open-ended and evolving business problems
  • Experience with version control systems, i.e. git
  • Experience developing dashboards, visualisations and reporting for non-technical stakeholders
