Our client is a federal government organisation with offices throughout Australia. Due to growth, they are seeking an APS6 Data Scientist to join their team in Richmond or Geelong.

• 12-month initial contract
• Hybrid with 2-3 days per week onsite

About the team
The team evaluates the effectiveness of the Scheme's support by analysing quantitative and qualitative relationship between payments and outcomes. The Data Science Hub (DaSH) is a dedicated team under the Scheme Effectiveness Branch that drives strategic, enterprise-wide adoption and implementation of Data Science and advanced analytics capabilities. The team collaborates with cross-functional stakeholders to identify high-impact use-cases that by solving will serve the clients and its participants and providers.

The role
The APS6 Data Scientist is a technically focused position and will have delegated authority and responsibility to resolve issues and risks across a range of activities. The position has reasonable autonomy and accountability to exercise both initiative and judgment to interpret legislation and policy, in the application of practices and procedures to achieve outcomes within the functions.
The APS6 Data Scientist is required to provide detailed technical, professional, policy, operational support and advice in relation to complex problems. Where required, the role will coordinate and assist in the strategic planning, program and project management and policy development that support the clients' objectives.

Key duties and responsibilities

• Researching and implementing innovative techniques and interdisciplinary methods to solve business issues with a focus on application of AI/data science and statistical techniques
• Designing statistical, mathematical, and various data science models to conduct analytical work that addresses business issues, initiatives, and the development of new products for the client
• Communicating effectively verbally and in writing, and presenting the outcomes of work undertaken, tailored to context and stakeholders
• Undertaking ad hoc modelling and data science requests for the advance of DaSH projects, initiatives or Analytics, Data and Actuarial (ADA) executive requests

To apply you will need the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria
1. 4+ years of actuarial / data scientist experience
2. Experience with complex internal or external stakeholder engagement and management
3. Proficient Python or R programming skills including data manipulation, analysis and model development/deployment
4. Demonstrated experience in application of Artificial Intelligence, particularly in Natural Language Processing (NLP) to extract information and design of decision-support systems

Desirable criteria
1. Proficient in SQL, accessing databases and data storage systems (e.g. AWS S3)
2. Working knowledge of Language Models, Large Language Models & Generative AI and how they can be used effectively
3. Working knowledge & understanding of AI Assurance and Governance frameworks relating to the development of ethically sound and safe AI systems
