Your opportunity
Mission Australia is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Community Chaplain to engage with the communities of Maddington and surrounding suburbs. In this vital role, you will connect with Mission Australia services, local churches, Christian groups, Faith groups community groups, and MA clients & tenants, providing support and hope to individuals. You will work with clients struggling with homelessness, mental health issues, addictions, and other life challenges.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Be available to listen to community members who have a need to talk about personal issues and circumstances
  • Provide pastoral care, information and support to community members empowering them to explore future goals, grow and confront personal challenges
  • Comply with core responsibilities set out in the MA Child & Youth Safe policies, procedures and supporting documents to practice as required by the role
  • Assist access to external support services and community resources as required
  • Connect and build relationships with local churches, Christian organisations and other groups to promote opportunities to offer support for MA clients / tenants and promote the services of local churches and other groups on request
  • Participate in local church and community events, activities and celebrations and contribute to church and community group communications
  • Support MA, community services, churches, other community groups and community members to create a community of cooperation and mutual respect, promoting an understanding of diversity and the range of cultures and their related traditions
  • Be available to listen to community members who have a need to talk about their own lives and their search for meaning, referring them to the appropriate church or community group
  • Attend local church and community forums and networks as agreed with MA leadership to promote the community chaplaincy program and participate in community discussions and consultations

Requirements for success

  • A Degree/Diploma in Chaplaincy/CPE/Ministry or a minimum of five years' experience in a similar role in a Christian Church or Community Sector
  • A comprehensive understanding of the issues and needs of program target group and working with churches and to spread the knowledge of God's love with sensitivity
  • Demonstrated professional approach to the role including maintaining appropriate boundaries and confidentiality
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross denominationally while maintaining the Bible as the inspired word of God
  • Experience in local churches, pastoral care or chaplaincy
  • Influential communication skills - verbal, listening, written and digital
  • Current driver's license
  • Current and valid Working with children Check
  • Complete alignment with Mission Australia's Unpacking our Founding Purpose Charter and values

Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
