Position Purpose and Scope of Role

The Civil Engineer is responsible for managing and coordinating civil engineering projects from concept to completion while preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates. The role applies civil engineering principles to interpret and review designs, assess site and construction requirements, develop technical solutions, and ensure compliance with industry standards and legislation. It involves reviewing engineering drawings, conducting feasibility studies, preparing detailed cost submissions, and liaising with stakeholders to ensure projects are technically sound, commercially viable, and delivered on time, within budget, and to required quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Engineering Design Review & Technical Analysis

Study, interpret, and review engineering drawings, specifications, and related documents to determine design intent and construction requirements.

Analyse proposed designs for constructability, technical compliance, and alignment with Australian Standards and industry codes.

Recommend design adjustments to address site conditions, improve safety, and optimise delivery.

Conduct feasibility studies and technical assessments to inform project planning and design refinement.

Estimating & Tendering

Prepare detailed cost estimates for civil engineering projects, incorporating design requirements, site conditions, and technical specifications.

Perform quantity take-offs from engineering drawings and documentation.

Evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations for technical accuracy and completeness.

Identify project risks and develop strategies to mitigate cost, quality, and schedule impacts.

Project Planning & Management

Plan, organise, and oversee civil engineering projects from inception to completion.

Prepare and review project documentation, including scopes of work, schedules, budgets, and technical specifications.

Coordinate and liaise with clients, contractors, consultants, and regulatory authorities.

Monitor project progress to ensure milestones and deadlines are met.

Manage resources effectively, including personnel, materials, and equipment.

Ensure all estimates, designs, and construction activities comply with relevant legislation, codes of practice, and environmental requirements.

Review and verify that proposed materials, methods, and equipment align with approved designs and standards.

Technical Reporting & Documentation

Prepare technical reports, project updates, and correspondence related to project status and outcomes.

Assist in contract management, including preparation of variation claims and payment schedules.

Maintain accurate cost databases, technical records, and historical project data.

Skills and Competencies

Strong ability to interpret and analyse engineering drawings, technical specifications, and project documentation.

Proficiency in quantity take-offs, cost analysis, engineering design review, and risk assessment.

Comprehensive understanding of civil engineering principles, construction methods, and industry standards.

Proficient in estimation software, CAD tools, project management applications, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail.

Mandatory Requirements

Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering.

Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in civil engineering, project coordination, and estimating.

White Construction Card and valid driver’s licence.

Competency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications.
