The Role
As a Web Developer within the Digital Development team, you will play a key role in building and maintaining websites, digital tools, applications, integrations, dashboards, and databases that support the strategic goals of the ACTU and the broader trade union movement. You will contribute to projects such as our AI initiative and Join 4.0, collaborating with campaigners and technical stakeholders to deliver ethical, accessible, and future-ready digital solutions.
Reporting to the Digital Development and Data Manager, you will:
Develop and maintain high-quality websites and campaign tools.
Build and manage ACTU software and systems with a focus on data security and analytics.
Contribute to AI and Join 4.0 projects through infrastructure development.
Create dashboards to track digital performance.
Ensure best practices in accessibility, privacy, and security.
Document systems and processes for ongoing development.
Leverage AI technologies to support ACTU’s strategic goals.
Key Selection Criteria
Essential:
High-level proficiency in WordPress theming and/or plugin development.
Strong skills in PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and core web technologies.
Experience with CSS frameworks (e.g., Bootstrap, Tailwind).
Familiarity with REST APIs and integration workflows.
Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and adapt.
Strong user focus and communication skills.
Proven experience working collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
Desirable:
Experience with UX and design principles.
Proficiency with GitHub or similar version control platforms.
Experience with AI platforms (e.g., OpenAI, Gemini, Claude).
Familiarity with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure).
Experience with PostgreSQL, Python, Django, React, Vue.
Knowledge of progressive web apps and infrastructure as code.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Agile methodologies.
Experience working with unions or progressive organisations.
Experience engaging respectfully and effectively with culturally diverse and marginalised communities, including First Nations peoples. Ability to engage inclusively, adopt culturally safe practices, and learn from lived experiences in ways that strengthen our movement and reflect ACTU’s commitment to equity and justice.
Benefits
The ACTU offers a competitive salary range of $118,347 to $138,257, depending on skills and experience, along with:
