The Opportunity
We are looking for a qualified Senior Building Surveyor to join our Planning and Community Development Team in Kununurra (2-3 days per week or remotely). A remote contract would require visit to the Shire on a regular basis every 2-3 months, for a minimum of a week.
As a Senior Building Surveyor, you will need to ensure compliance with all legislation, codes and guidelines as they apply to building and construction. The role will also responsible for liaising with the community builders, architects, developers and engineers with respect to the legislative requirements for new construction. Your responsibilities will include:
- Assessment and processing of building and demolition applications and certificates
- Undertaking and coordinating inspections of private swimming pool safety barriers for compliance
- Maintaining appropriate records, ensuring building records and information systems are correct and up to date
- Liaising with the relevant external stakeholders (i.e. Building Commission, Department of Fire Emergency Services, Water Corporation, Western Australian Local Government Association and the Australian Bureau of Statistics
- Maintaining a high level of knowledge in current and emerging industry practices and legislation changes
- Providing technical advice to external customers on building related matters and professional support for internal referrals to attend the Development Control Unit (DCU)
- Investigating and resolving non-compliant building matters based on risk, due process and recommended enforcement action
- Carrying out building inspections to assess compliance with the Building Code of Australia, National Construction Code, etc
- Assisting in improving day-to-day operational processes, and checklists and public facing information (i.e. Shire policies, guidelines or information sheets)
- Assessing land use and development proposals for compliance with relevant building legislation and standards
- Providing written reports, verbal advice and operational support when required
Relevant qualifications such as Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying or equivalent, Building Surveying Practitioner Level 2 Certificate of Registration in Western Australia, Current unrestricted WA ‘C’ class Driver’s Licence, and Current National Police Check (within 6 months) are essentials for this role.
You will also need a minimum of 3 years experience as building surveyor with sound working knowledge in Building Act 2011, Building Regulations 2012, Building Code of Australia and other relevant legislation, ability to provide specialist advice and apply knowledge of relevant procedures, excellent interpesonal and time management skills, high-level of Ms Office skills, demonstrated skills in investigation, research, and reporting on building related matters as well as problem solving.

The Shire is prepared to enter in to negotiations around the pay rate advertised if it is determined necessary to appoint a candidate of the calibre sought.
