Why this role matters:
Victim-survivors of financial abuse face complex tax issues that are almost impossible to navigate without professional tax advice – advice they simply cannot afford – leaving many trapped in debt cycles, tax policy-induced poverty and even facing bankruptcy. This has profound ripple effects on their housing, employment, financial stability, and child custody.
UNSW Tax and Business Advisory Clinic fills this tax advice gap by design – delivering free, independent tax advice while building the data and evidence base needed to identify and resolve systemic issues. This model is both life-changing for clients and system-shifting on a national scale.
Working closely with the Clinic Director, Practice Manager, and Principal Clinic Supervisor, the Senior Tax Accountant (Trauma-Informed Practice) will engage in financial abuse-specific casework, research, advocacy, and law reform efforts. This role will offer trauma-informed tax and accounting advice to victim-survivors of financial abuse. The role also offers opportunities to represent the Clinic in engagements with government, policymakers, industry, the community sector, and the media – all while delivering life-changing support to those who need it most.
Skills Required:
- Tertiary qualification in Accounting, including relevant Australian tax units (or equivalent).
- Demonstrated experience providing tax and financial support to individuals and small business (TPB tax agent registration is desirable but not essential).
- Proven ability to understand and respond to the needs of clients with lived experience of trauma.
- Demonstrated ability to analyse, interpret and integrate complex financial and operational data to inform decision-making and strategic direction.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including in highly sensitive and confidential contexts.
- Strong organisational skills, initiative and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a high-performing team environment.
