About the opportunity
The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for two proactive Technical Officers to join the vibrant Technical Support Services portfolio assisting the practical class delivery in the dry and wet lab teaching spaces at the Charles Perkins Centre. This role is responsible for delivering high-quality, client-focused technical support that enhances research and teaching outcomes across multiple schools and faculties.
One role will primarily support Pharmacology and Pharmacy classes, while the other will primarily support the Medical Sciences. Willingness for cross-training, adaptability to learn new techniques, and flexibility to work around the business unit needs are required.
The successful candidate/s will provide hands-on assistance for practical classes, demonstrations, and research activities; maintain equipment and facilities to ensure a safe and efficient working environment; and offer expert technical advice to academic and research staff. As part of a dynamic and collaborative team, the Technical Officers will contribute to the delivery of engaging, safe teaching spaces and support the manufacture of research equipment using industry-leading machinery across the University's network of laboratories.
Working closely with the Senior Technical Officer/s, you will collaborate closely with academic staff to ensure timely and accurate setup of practical classes and research support activities. Drawing on your technical expertise, scientific knowledge, and understanding of relevant standards and procedures, you will solve complex technical problems, set up and demonstrate specialised equipment, and train users in its safe and effective operation.
The Technical Officers will engage with Technical Support Services (TSS) teams across the University to support resource-sharing and consistency in operations. The role also involves contributing to the implementation of new systems, technologies, and organisational processes at the local level, working collaboratively with other University units as required.
The Technical Officers may also provide supervision and guidance to junior technical staff and will occasionally be required to support activities in other locations across the University.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- perform whole-of-life handling, storage and disposal of restricted/hazardous waste, materials, and specimens in accordance with established technical and safety procedures
- support the implementation of service improvements and service excellence within the responsibility area
- develop strong, collaborative, functional relationships within TSS and with other relevant University teams, to enable delivery of effective technical services
- support the Senior Technical Officer in planning and managing resources (e.g. equipment, consumables, services, etc.) and ensuring that critical teaching and research priorities are met
- lead by example by visibly adhering to established WHS/compliance procedures and leading practices, including all customer-facing activities and communications
- monitor, report on and carry out corrective actions on WHS and legislative compliance of the work environment, including in relation to building-related maintenance and facility cleaning.
About you

- a bachelor's degree in the following fields; Biochemistry, Medical Science, Pharmacology or Pharmacy
- the ability to apply and contribute to the development, maintenance, and review of standard technical documentation and operating procedures
- demonstrated experience in cell culture, ELISA, microbiology, molecular biology, and/or chemical preparation techniques
- demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work. Along with the demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise work, sometimes under pressure, with competing priorities and limited supervision
- experience of optimising protocols and an ability apply and contribute to the development, maintenance, and review of standard technical documentation and operating procedures
- relevant experience preparing, streamlining, set up/pack down of higher educational laboratory classes as well as experience with safety and compliance training in this workspace
- sound working knowledge and experience in implementing of safety regulations (OGTR/PC2) and operating procedures within the laboratory environment, including relevant experience the safe handling/storage/disposal of biological waste and hazardous substance.
