About the opportunity
The University of Sydney is looking for a skilled and motivated Senior Technical Officer to join the team and lead the vibrant research focused team to deliver high quality research operations support within the Chemistry Building. This role is responsible for delivering high-quality, client-focused technical support that enhances research outcomes across the building occupants.
The Senior Technical Officer is responsible for mentoring, coaching, and developing the team through targeted professional and technical training, while fostering a collaborative and service-focused work environment.
Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, the Senior Technical Officer oversees day-to-day operations of technical facilities, including managing allocated budgets for consumables, equipment and shared research instrumentation ensuring maintenance standards are met, and upholding compliance with Work, Health and Safety (WHS) policies and legislation. The role will lead projects, implement improvement processes, systems, and service delivery models to enhance operational efficiency and customer experience across the research laboratories within the Chemistry Building.
This role plays a critical stakeholder engagement role, from students and researchers through to the academic community within Chemistry building
While primarily based within a designated area, the position may also provide support and subject matter expertise across other University locations as required.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- manage the timely delivery of agreed technical services in the designated area of responsibility, in line with the research, requirements of the work area
- provide effective day-to-day leadership, management, delegation, coordination, guidance, and support to direct reports, including effective division of workload between staff
- develop and promote a positive, professional, customer-focused team culture that is aligned with stakeholder needs. Set and execute the best practice standards for customer interactions
- ensure effective and efficient communications through a range of delivery channels and formats, such as presentations, face-to-face, staff forums, websites, newsletters, emails, etc
- manage the collection of appropriate data and information to support identification of resourcing usage/forecasts/trends/issues/invoicing/ service delivery reporting
- support procurement activities for physical resources and services required to maintain operational efficiency and service performance targets, including scoping specifications, user acceptance testing, service contracts and preparation of appropriate end user training material
- lead a high performing, adaptable team, with efficient management of workload levels to support effective delivery of work activity.
About you

- a bachelor's degree - Chemistry or equivalent combination of relevant training or experience
- staff training, development, and management skills: demonstrated experience in the supervision, training, mentoring and performance management of staff; and experience managing and resolving a diverse range of HR issues
- communication and relationship building: proven ability to establish, influence and maintain working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders
- demonstrated experience in delivering high quality customer focused technical support
- excellent planning, organisational and project management skills, including the ability to prioritise workload to meet multiple deadlines and maintain attention to detail in a high-volume environment
- extensive and relevant laboratory management experience, including implementing practices/procedures to improve compliance particularly in work health and safety and operational efficacy.
