We are seeking a forward-thinking and experienced audit and assurance professional to lead the Department’s internal audit program. This senior role offers the opportunity to drive innovation, deliver strategic advice, and strengthen governance and accountability across a large and complex public sector organisation.
Context

The Professional Standards and Conduct Division is responsible for the delivery of a range of integrated functions and oversees Standards and Integrity Directorate, Risk and Assurance Directorate, Legal and Legislative Services Directorate, Parent Liaison Office and the Screening Unit.
The Risk and Assurance Directorate delivers high-level audit and risk management expertise with an emphasis on a quality audit and risk management program that addresses organisational accountability and supports a broad client need across the Department. The Directorate’s services include:
- provide assurance to the Director General and the Audit and Risk Committee that the Department's financial and operational controls are operating in an efficient, effective, economical and ethical manner
- assist management in improving the Department's business performance
- provide a risk advisory function with its focus on assisting staff to manage risks effectively
- undertake a governance function for the Department’s externally available policies and delegations.
The Role
The Manager – Audit and Assurance provides strategic leadership of the Department’s internal audit and assurance functions. Reporting to the Director, Risk and Assurance, you will deliver expert advice to ensure the Department’s financial and operational controls meet legislative, ethical, and governance requirements.
As Manager, you will oversee the design and delivery of the Department’s internal audit program, ensure high-quality audit reporting to the Audit and Risk Committee, and drive innovation in audit methodology and data analytics. You will lead a multidisciplinary team and work closely with internal and external stakeholders to enhance accountability, compliance, and continuous improvement.
This role would suit a decisive, forward-thinking audit and assurance professional with excellent leadership, analytical, and stakeholder engagement skills. Your ability to manage complex issues, mentor staff, and provide clear and authoritative assurance advice will be critical to your success.

Eligibility
To work with us, you must:
- be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or have a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment.
- consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit before you start.
- be suitably qualified to perform the role of officer in charge of the Department’s internal audit function, as per Treasurer’s Instruction 10. Suitably qualified includes current membership of a relevant professional body (CPA Australia, CA ANZ, Institute of Public Accountants, Institute of Internal Auditors) or relevant experience, skills, and knowledge to perform the role, appropriate for the Department’s operating environment.
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
