Established in 1982, Alzheimer’s WA provides care, support, awareness and information to assist people living with dementia, as well as their families and carers.
Our services include advocacy, education, partnerships, training, consultancy and holistic person-centred care programs, based on a philosophy of understanding the lived experiences of those living with dementia. We provide CHSP, HCP and NDIS packages and day/overnight respite in our four homes based in Perth, Mandurah and Albany.

Position Summary
The WHS Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring workplace health and safety policies and procedures in compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements. The role ensures a safe environment for clients, staff, and visitors in an aged care setting, promoting a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
WHS Governance
Provide WHS expertise, guidance and advice to management, the WHS Committee and health and safety representatives, ensuring they understand their role and meet their legislative obligations.
Review and update the WHS management system, including standards, policies and procedures and supporting systems, ensuring that all relevant legislative and regulatory requirements and standards are met.
Establish and maintain strong relationships across AWA, ensuring that all parties have a clear agreement and understanding of their respective roles and accountabilities to reduce risk and injury and ensure a safe workplace.
Develop relationships with a range of external organisations, including WorkSafe WA, insurers, professional networks, and other local government authorities to keep abreast of developments in WHS practice
WHS Management, Systems and Reporting
Review, evaluate, and analyse work environments and design programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, and biological agents or ergonomic factors.
Coordinate annual management review meetings and develop annual WHS management plans to achieve continuous improvement.
Coordinate WHS activities across all AWA sites and contribute to the development and implementation of plans regarding key work health and safety strategies.
Ensure that WHS Information Technology systems are being utilised and investigate and recommend improvements.
Ensure that rigorous WHS audits, inspections and investigations are conducted, and that appropriate risk identification, assessment and control measures are in place (WHS Risk Register). Liaise and work with the Asset Manager in regard to WHS audits and inspections (Service environment audits) when required.
Coordinate and conduct the WHS Induction processes for new workers.
Liaise with the Quality team and ensure that breaches and any non-compliance or observations are investigated, resolved, corrective actions taken, and learnings identified and disseminated across AWA.
Analyse WHS related information and prepare regular reports for the Senior Leadership Team, the Management Team and the WHS Committee or external authorities.
WHS Education and Training
Coach and support management team to foster and promote our safety culture.
Engage with management and staff on WHS issues and programs, communicate and promote effective WHS practices.
Determine the WHS training needs of AWA and establish required training programs.
Conduct safety training and education programs, and demonstrate the use of safety equipment.
Oversee the coordination of WHS compliance training throughout AWA.
Develop and maintain hygiene programs such as noise surveys, continuous atmosphere monitoring and ventilation surveys.
Coordinate and ensure education systems are in place to achieve ongoing compliance and the maintenance of a safe work environment.
Injury Management and Workers Compensation
Administer and manage staff injury management process and workers compensation by coordinating with insurance company, management and staff and developing and maintaining Work and Health Plans as required.
Monitor and analyse workers compensation claims and incident reports and develop appropriate responses, including preventative actions and WHS programs.
Assist in the injury management process by attending medical appointments with staff, if required.
WHS Performance measures
Maintain key relationships and follow AWA protocols.
Comply with legislative and regulatory requirements and standards.
Achieve annual objectives and targets from the WHS Management Plan.
Maintain certification to Australian Standards.
Implement preventative measures within appropriate timeframes.
Increase lead indicators and reduce lag indicators with a focus on being proactive.
Ensure documents (policies, procedures, forms) exist and are reviewed and updated.
Qualifications & Knowledge
Relevant qualification in Work Health and Safety (e.g., Diploma in WHS) or equivalent experience.
Strong knowledge of WHS legislation, aged care standards, and risk management practices.
Commitment and understanding of Alzheimer’s WA’s Vision, Purpose, Philosophy and Values.
Experience
2 – 3 years demonstrated experience in a health and safety role with exposure to risk and incident management (ideally in the health sector).
Demonstrated experience with end-to-end incident reporting and undertaking investigations.
Experience in developing and delivering WHS training.
Skills and Abilities
Ability to develop constructive and influential relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage with staff at all levels.
Ability to conduct risk assessments, investigations, and audits.
Proficiency in using MS Office, WHS reporting and incident management systems.
Demonstrated success in the development of safety cultures that promote workplace health and safety whilst supporting the achievement of organisational deliverables
Excellent organisational skills for all documentation related to workplace compliance and WHS program to educate employees
Strong problem-solving skills to suggest necessary changes to unsafe work conditions
