About us
Mookai Rosie Bi-Bayan (MRBB), founded in the 1980s by Aunty Rose Richards, is a respected Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled health organisation based in Cairns. MRBB provides culturally safe, holistic health services to women and families from Cape York, the Northern Peninsula Area, and the Torres Strait while they are away from home for medical care. At the heart of MRBB’s integrated model of care is our Maternal Program, which delivers culturally safe and comprehensive support for women throughout their pregnancy journey. This includes midwifery, antenatal, postnatal, and doula services, all designed to honour cultural practices and empower women and families.
About the role
The Cultural Birth Worker supports women through pregnancy, birth, and early parenting by providing trauma-informed care that encourages bonding and healthy development from the womb onward. You'll help promote breastfeeding using the World Health Organisation’s ten steps, offer antenatal education, support women at medical appointments, and provide doula care through birth planning and ongoing emotional support. It’s a hands-on, heart-first role that makes a real difference in the lives of our women and families.
Candidate selection criteria
Not essential but highly regarded, Certificate III in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care or equivalent experience.
Willingness and ability to complete a Certificate IV in Doula Support Services within an agreed timeframe.
Demonstrated genuine interest and willingness to learn about maternal health, including a commitment to supporting women through pregnancy, birth, and early parenting, with an understanding of the importance of culturally safe and holistic care.
Experience and/or demonstrated understanding of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and an understanding of the impact of trauma on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
Demonstrated experience in delivering culturally safe health promotion activities, preferably in antenatal and perinatal care settings, is highly regarded.
Excellent organisational and time management skills.
Demonstrated proficiency in computer-based programs, including Microsoft Office and Health Information Management Systems, to support daily administrative and clinical tasks.
First Aid and CPR, or willingness to complete in agreed timeframe.
Current Working with Children Check (Blue Card)
Current Queensland Drivers Licence

Rewarding salary range: $61,796.80 – $68,187.60 per annum (based on candidate’s qualifications, experience, and knowledge)
