About the opportunity

We are seeking to establish a pool of suitably qualified applicants for the role of Senior Quarantine Inspector (Road Check Point) at the Western Australia (WA) /South Australia (SA) checkpoint.

As a Senior Quarantine Inspector (Road Check Point), you will be part of a dedicated team with an ongoing commitment to identifying potential biosecurity risks at the state border. You will have the opportunity to interact with a wide range of travellers and commercial transport operators; on average more than 120,000 vehicles enter through the road checkpoints each year. All vehicles require inspection, and the occupants questioned to ensure any biosecurity risk is identified. The checkpoints are open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. Shift work arrangements are required for these roles, and attractive penalty rates are offered.

You will be involved in conducting inspections, interpreting inspection documentation against appropriate legislation, and completing certification documentation as per procedures. You will also assist with report preparation and maintain quarantine operation statistics.

Employees reside in the isolated and small settlement at Eucla, located 11km west of the WA/SA Road Checkpoint.

Eucla township is located 1400kms from Perth and has a population of about 50.

From Eucla, it is 5hrs to Ceduna, 9hrs to Kalgoorlie, 10hrs to Esperance and 15hrs to Perth.

Internet can be obtained by employees at their own cost. Only Telstra network is available.

Eucla has no hospital – there is a nurse’s post only. Medical emergencies require the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

There is no bus, trains or planes into or out of Eucla. The only way in and out of town is by private vehicles.

Fully furnished accommodation is supplied

There are 2 roadhouses but no shops

Grocery trucks deliver twice a week from Norseman and once a fortnight using Coles online shopping

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have experience in interpreting and applying legislation, regulations, policies, and guidelines, and providing advice in dynamic environments. You will have the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people and have the ability to use initiative and problem-solving skills in an enforcement environment. You will also enjoy outdoor work, as working at the checkpoint involves exposure to the weather elements.
