About the Barkly Region

The Barkly Region covers more than 320,000 km2 stretching from the old Telegraph Station at Barrow Creek in the south to the historical droving township of Newcastle Waters in the north. Located approximately 1000km south of Darwin and 500km north of Alice Springs. Tennant Creek has a population of 3,252 and is the largest town in the region.

About Ampilatwatja

Ampilatwatja is a remote Aboriginal community located approximately 325 km northeast of Alice Springs, on Alyawarr Country. With strong ties to culture, language, and Country, the community is known for its vibrant art, bush medicine knowledge, and proud traditions. Life in Ampilatwatja is deeply community-focused, with strong family connections and a deep respect for cultural practices.

Set in stunning desert landscapes, the town has a school, health clinic, store, airstrip, and community-run programs that support wellbeing and resilience. Despite the challenges of remote living, Ampilatwatja continues to thrive through its strength in culture, connection to land, and strong sense of identity.

About us

The Barkly Regional Council is the second-largest Local Government by land mass in Australia. The estimated population of the Barkly Regional Council is 6,316 spread over 7 communities (2 regional towns and 5 remote communities). Employing 250 staff, of whom 67% are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, we are committed to delivering services for residents of the region.

About the Role

Barkly Regional Council is seeking a motivated and energetic Youth, Sport & Recreation Team Leader to be the driving force behind youth engagement and recreational activities in Ampilatwatja.

As the Youth, Sport and Recreation Team Leader, you will be the first point of contact for community youth, sport, and recreation initiatives. Your role will focus on building strong, positive relationships within the community, coordinating and delivering engaging youth programs aligned with Council strategies and policies. This is a hands-on position that requires working flexible hours, including school holidays, evenings, and weekends to meet the needs of the community.

The Essentials

· Demonstrated experience organising and running youth, sport, and recreation activities.

· Must be self-sufficient, solution-focused, and capable of working independently in a remote environment.

· Understanding of Aboriginal Culture and Aboriginal issues.

· Good written and oral communication, numeracy, and computer skills.

· Sound understanding of Workplace Health and Safety (WHS).

· Current Provide First Aid (HLTAID011).

· Current CPR - Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (HLTAID009).

· Current 4WD Operations on Unsealed Roads (VTP414).

· Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation (SIS30122).

· Current Driver’s Licence.

· Current National Police Criminal History Check.

· Current Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card – Northern Territory).

The Finer Details

· Full-Time Temporary position paying Level 7 Pay Point 1 of the Barkly Regional Council Enterprise Agreement 2023. (End Date: 30th June 2025).

· Annual Salary of $80,057.24 per annum ($3,079.12 gross per fortnight).

· Remote Community Zone Allowance of $2.51 per ordinary hour.

· 12% Superannuation.

· Annual Leave of 6 weeks paid with 17.5% Leave Loading.

· Subsidised housing maybe included for the right applicant (includes utilities, basic furniture and pots, pans, plates and cutlery).
