About the role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Cyber Security Specialist to support the delivery of projects within IT.

This is a newly created role, which reports to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), with matrix reporting to the Head of IT PMO, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams and key stakeholders to ensure the initiatives, projects & programs in IT Delivery align with the Australian Cyber Security Centre's Essential Eight, the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF), and industry best practices.

This role will facilitate cyber best practices across projects, assess, advise, and guide the implementation of cyber best practices and technical controls across the University's cloud and infrastructure environments, including API integration and Salesforce Core, Data Cloud, Education Cloud, Experience Cloud, and Marketing Cloud.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and manage cyber security workstreams within projects and programs in IT Delivery, including undertaking risk and control gap assessment, ensuring security is embedded into impacted ecosystems and supporting systems.

Provide support to the CISO with security consulting, conducting reviews, threat modelling and facilitating security verification and penetration testing across new platforms and legacy environments, as well as in the preparation of security architecture blueprints, secure integration designs, and remediation plans.

Provide expert advice on the implementation of technical controls to meet compliance with Information Security Policy, Essential Eight (up to Target Maturity Level), NIST Cyber Security Framework and cyber security industry best practices.

Provide cyber security knowledge and expertise to support programs/projects across the University and entities to ensure compliance with industry and MQ IT security standards.

Ensure secure configuration and operation of Salesforce modules, including user access, API integrations, data protection, instantiation of security event monitoring and incident response (ready for operational security team adoption).

Design and deliver secure functionality across Salesforce Core, Data Cloud, Education Cloud, Experience Cloud, and Marketing Cloud.

Collaborate and work with business and technical teams (engineers, architects, IT) to advise and implement secure solution design, deployment and controls.

Coordinate and contribute to the review, development and implementation of policies, procedures, and standards related to cloud security, access management, and data classification, as well as contribute to continuous improvement of MQ IT security policies, systems and processes.

Provide risk-based recommendations to leadership on security trade-offs and business impacts.

Prepare compliance dashboards, documents, reports, presentations for project, audit and compliance reporting.

Support knowledge sharing and capability uplift within IT and across stakeholder groups, including facilitating stakeholder workshops and security awareness sessions.

Build and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with team members, and internal and external stakeholders.

About You

You are an experienced Senior Cyber Security Specialist or equivalent, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective collaboration with diverse teams. You have a proven ability to effectively achieve desired outcomes and to adapt to changing circumstances.

Required criteria

Relevant degree in a related discipline (i.e. Technology) and/or equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.

Relevant certifications: CISSP, CISM, Salesforce Security & Privacy certifications, ISO 27001 Lead Implementer, or equivalent.

Extensive experience (minimum 7 years) in cyber security roles, including

significant consulting or project delivery work.

Proven experience implementing and assessing controls against Australian Essential Eight and NIST Cyber Security Framework.

In-depth knowledge of cloud security, with strong experience in Salesforce security architecture and controls.

Demonstrated success in delivering security support, assessment and ensuring compliance for large-scale digital transformation or CRM migration programs.

Ability to conduct and interpret penetration tests, threat models, and security architecture reviews.

Familiarity with multiple Australian regulations and frameworks (Privacy Act, NIST CSF, NDB, ISO 27001, ISM).

Excellent interpersonal and communications (written and verbal) skills with demonstrated ability to engage effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders with varying technical knowledge.

Desirable criteria

Relevant certifications: CISSP, CSSLP, CISM, Salesforce Security & Privacy certifications, ISO 27001 Lead Implementer, or equivalent.

Experience in higher education, research, or clinical/medical sectors.

Understanding of student lifecycle management, student systems, and university operations.

Experience with Salesforce Shield, Event Monitoring, and third-party security integrations.

Familiarity with CI/CD, DevSecOps, and security automation practices.
