We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Regulatory Compliance Officer to join our team!
What You Will Do:
As a Regulatory Compliance Officer, you will play a key role in upholding the integrity of our local laws and state legislation, ensuring Cairns continues to be a vibrant, safe, and sustainable community. This is a dynamic and technically skilled position ideal for a professional who thrives on variety, is confident in applying complex legislation, and is passionate about delivering outstanding public service.
You will investigate and manage complaints and compliance issues across a diverse legislative portfolio—including the Planning Act 2016, Building Act 1975, Environmental Protection Act 1994, Local Government Act 2009, and Council's own Local Laws. You will be trusted to apply sound judgment in sensitive and high-profile matters, and your expertise will directly support enforcement outcomes, public trust, and regulatory education across the region.
What We Are Looking For:
Diploma in Local Government or related field or Certificate IV in Government (Investigations) or equivalent qualifications or extensive experience in an investigative and/or enforcement role within Local Government or other Government department.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Building Act 1975, Building Code of Australia, Local Government Act 2009, Planning Act 2016 and the Environmental Protection Act 1994 and the relationship between each law and their application in the enforcement process.
Demonstrated ability and experience in interpreting complex legislation and in undertaking inspections, investigations and investigative report writing in relation to complex/high risk offences within a multi-disciplinary team.
Previous experience with investigations, inspections, evidence gathering, report writing and issuing Penalty Infringement Notices.
Demonstrated conflict resolution skills whilst maintaining a courteous and diplomatic manner, particularly in volatile situations.
