The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
What Will You Do?
In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing ALS Child and Family Advocacy Service (ACFAS) program within the Care and Protection/Family Law Practice. This role delivers culturally appropriate legal advice and early intervention in Care & Protection matters through the ALS Child and Family Advocacy Service (ACFAS), aiming to reduce the overrepresentation of Aboriginal children in the child protection system. Based in Dubbo, Tamworth or Parramatta, the position involves outreach, community engagement, and collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders. You will:
- Provide early intervention legal advice and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and carers in child protection and family law matters.
- Participate in community legal education, stakeholder engagement, and legal reform initiatives.
- Respect and support Aboriginal cultural practices while maintaining up-to-date legal knowledge and professional competence.
- Communicate effectively with client facing complex issues, managing files, schedules, and legal systems efficiently.
- Collaborate with internal teams and liaise with external stakeholders to support clients and enhance service delivery.
- Travel regionally (Dubbo, Tamworth, Parramatta) for outreach and service provision, holding a valid driver’s licence.
Who Are We Looking For?
A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to:
- Hold appropriate legal qualifications with a current NSW Practising Certificate and 3+ years’ experience representing clients in Care & Protection/Family law matters.
- Demonstrate commitment to social justice and strong knowledge of Care & Protection law, practice, and procedure.
- Excellent communication, legal research, time management, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and in teams, meet deadlines, manage workloads, and provide high-quality legal advice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait clients.
- Willing to be based in Dubbo, Tamworth, or Parramatta, travel regionally, hold an unrestricted NSW drivers’ licence, and maintain a clear police check.
- Knowledge of and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural needs; identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander is desirable.
