The Indian Ocean Territories Administration (IOTA) is seeking a proactive and adaptable individual to join our small, dedicated team as the Land, Heritage, Environment and GIS Officer.

This role offers a rare chance to contribute to meaningful work across land management, environmental planning, heritage protection, and geospatial systems—while living and working in one of Australia’s most remote and ecologically significant communities.

What You’ll Do

As part of the Land, Heritage and Environment team, you’ll:

• Maintain and manage spatial data to support operational and strategic decision-making.
• Provide technical and administrative support across land, heritage, and environmental functions.
• Assist internal stakeholders with the use of GIS tools and spatial workflows.
• Prepare maps, reports, and documentation to inform planning and projects.
• Build collaborative relationships with local stakeholders, community groups, and government agencies.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking candidates with:

• Experience or knowledge in using GIS software (e.g. QGIS, ArcGIS) to collect, manage, and present spatial data.
• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail when managing datasets and metadata.
• A sound understanding of geospatial concepts, including coordinate systems, spatial data accuracy, and data confidentiality.
• Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear maps, technical documentation, and provide advice to stakeholders .
• The ability to manage competing priorities, work independently and contribute to a collaborative and inclusive team.

Desirable but Not Essential

• Qualifications (or progress toward) in GIS, environmental science, geography, planning, or a related field.
• Understanding of land tenure, land management or environmental processes in an Australian context.
• Experience living or working in remote or cross-cultural communities.
