About This Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Animal Technical Officer to join our team at the Translational Research Institute (TRI). In this role, you'll support researchers by overseeing animal care, husbandry, and breeding programs while ensuring compliance with ethical and facility standards.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Deliver high-quality care, husbandry, and welfare monitoring of laboratory animals
- Support colony management, including health checks, necropsies, and sample collection
- Maintain cleanliness, biosecurity, and facility equipment to required standards
- Review animal ethics applications and provide compliance guidance
- Perform basic animal procedures and prepare/administer restricted drugs as required
- Supervise and support technical staff and coordinate daily tasks in consultation with supervisors
- Liaise with researchers to facilitate facility services and scheduling

About You
- We're looking for a qualified and experienced animal technician with:
- A degree, diploma, or Certificate III in animal science/technology (or equivalent experience), plus 2+ years in a laboratory animal facility
- Experience managing complex genetically modified rodent colonies
- Proficiency in basic animal procedures (e.g. identification, substance delivery, sample collection)
- Experience supervising and training staff, and supporting experimental work
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to advise and report professionally
- Sound knowledge of regulatory requirements including Animal Ethics, Biosafety, Biosecurity, and WHS
Desirable:
- Experience with assisted reproductive technologies
- Skills in intermediate procedures (e.g. anaesthesia, SC implants, tissue harvests)
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, mandatory immunisations and medical clearance.
