The Opportunity

This is an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Identified Position.
The Tangentyere Youth, Families and Community Safety (YFCS) Division brings together a range of programs and services for young people. This includes the Brown Street Youth Service, Child and Youth Outreach Service and Night and Youth Patrol services. The YCS Division is increasingly working in an integrated fashion, ensuring staff and programs work together to provide holistic services for young people to achieve positive outcomes in education, safety, and wellbeing. This means that all staff, including YCS Youth & Night Patrol Team Leader, are working in collaboration with programs to provide client and placed-based focused services that are flexible and responsive to needs.

Tangentyere Night and Youth Patrol service operates seven nights per week, 365 days of the year. The Service provides non-coercive primary intervention strategies for young people and adults participating in the nightlife of Alice Springs. The service provides culturally safe and accessible transport home or to safe places for children, young people and adults as a diversionary measure from engagement in antisocial behaviours or contact with Police in the Central Business District (CBD).

The Night and Youth Patrol Team Leader will directly report to the YCS Coordinator, work alongside the Youth & Community Safety Team Leadership group and will directly supervise the Patrols team to achieve positive service outcomes. The Team Leader is responsible for the effective operations of Night and Youth Patrol service nightly, ensuring the service provides early intervention, mediation and negotiation strategies aimed at the prevention of conflict and antisocial behaviour through patrolling the public areas of Alice Springs and town camps seven days a week, 7pm to 3am.

Working in partnership with another Night and Youth Patrol Team Leader and Senior Patroller, the team leader lead operations nightly and delegate tasks including assessment of nightly referrals, represent Tangentyere at nightly Patroller meetings, manage incidents with a key focus on risk mitigation, maintain accurate records and client information, ensure compliance with Tangentyere policy and Territory legislation when operating the service, hold a valid driver's license and ability to operate a vehicle nightly and participate in relevant leadership and operational meetings and training.

The successful applicant will have relevant experience delivering outreach or community-based programs, holds an understanding of the issues facing Aboriginal Town Campers, visitors and residents of Alice Springs, hold a valid driver’s licence, valid Ochre Card and police check, is willing to participate in a rotating roster and has the ability to work nights.

Responsibilities

· Provide leadership and coaching to the Night & Youth Patrol team.

· Ensure the operations of the Night & Youth Patrol service through organising, prioritising and monitoring staff workload and performance.

· Work in partnership with police and other services providers to create a safer community and to improve outcomes for people by providing guidance, information, and referrals.

· Ensure Night & Youth Patrol administration is completed daily including accurate recording of client data, incidents and handovers.

· Provide assistance to Indigenous people at risk of either causing harm or being harmed through regular patrolling of the town camps and public areas of Alice Springs and transporting people in vulnerable situations to safe places.

· Assist with achieving quality management objectives across the organisation.

· Assist with achieving safeguarding objectives across the organisation.

· Assist with achieving compliance objectives across the organisation.

· Other reasonable duties as required.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

Required

· Identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.

· Experience leading a small team that delivers a service to Aboriginal people in an outreach capacity and/or patrol experience.

· Understanding of issues facing Aboriginal people in Alice Springs.

· Understanding the importance of teamwork including conflict resolution within a service delivery environment.

· Demonstrated ability to mentor, train, give advice and support within a small team environment.

· Good literacy, numeracy, and computer skills.

· Current NT Drivers Licence, NT Working with Children (Ochre) Card, satisfactory Police Check, and proof of full (3) vaccination against COVID-19.

Desirable

· Town Camp Resident or Knowledge about the Town camps surrounding Alice Springs.

· Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Certified.

· Certificate II in Community Services or equivalent (or willingness to obtain).

· Senior First Aid certificate.

· Working knowledge of Aboriginal Language/s.
