About us

The Department of the Legislative Assembly is a dynamic and collaborative workplace with a positive, supportive team culture. You will be working in an organisation which is committed to providing excellent impartial advice and support to all Members of the Legislative Assembly to enable them to fulfil their roles as elected representatives of the people of New South Wales. Our staff are passionate about the democratic process and work to ensure the public are involved and engaged in parliamentary activities.

Our vision at the Legislative Assembly is to be leaders in the delivery of parliamentary democracy and community engagement. Our values are integrity, respect and excellence, and this is reflected in our positive and supportive work culture. Our 2024 People Matter Survey found that 91% of our employees would recommend the Legislative Assembly as a great place to work. This is 34% higher than the rest of the public sector. We also have an employee engagement rate of 86%, which is 23% higher than the rest of the sector.

The Legislative Assembly also supports flexible work, with work from home arrangements for staff considered.

About the unit

Engagement Officers work within the Committees business unit, one of three business units in the Department. The Committees business unit provides research, procedural advice and secretariat support to Legislative Assembly-administered committees to fulfil their functions of legislative, policy and fiscal scrutiny and to facilitate the conduct of parliamentary committee work. Committees increase public awareness and debate on issues under consideration by Parliament. They benefit the community by reviewing proposed laws, facilitating more informed policy-making and ensuring greater government accountability. The unit is also passionate about the public’s involvement in parliamentary activities and works to enhance public participation and engagement with the work of the Assembly.

About the position

  • The Engagement Officer provides administrative and operational support to the Legislative Assembly's engagement programs, including preparing and uploading digital content and supporting the department's work to promote diversity and inclusion by reaching people and communities who have been historically underrepresented in Assembly committee processes.
  • The Engagement Officer works within a small engagement team to support various committees. They work collaboratively with two Digital and Community Engagement Managers, who are responsible for overseeing the committees’ engagement work. However, there is also a level of autonomy which requires well developed time management skills and self-motivation.
