ABOUT THE ROLE
To support our national growth, Smedley's Engineers is seeking a Melbourne-based Senior Engineer to join our Design and Testing team, reporting to the Operations Manager.
This role involves the design, scoping, and development of products, engineering initiatives, and projects, managing them throughout their full lifecycle.

ABOUT YOU
You’re a capable and solutions-focused mechanical engineer with hands-on experience in heavy vehicle design and engineering project delivery. You bring a solid understanding of Australian Design Rules (ADR), and relevant Australian Standards, with a strong focus on ensuring compliance and performance within regulatory frameworks.
You’re confident managing complex design and testing projects from concept through to delivery, balancing technical insight with commercial awareness. You work well in collaborative environments and are known for your ability to guide outcomes, support junior engineers, and build strong working relationships with clients and stakeholders.
Your approach is analytical and methodical, with proven strengths in technical reporting, risk analysis, and project coordination. You take pride in developing practical engineering solutions that deliver real-world value. You have a high level of proficiency in CAD/CAE software, applying it confidently in the design and analysis of heavy vehicle systems. Above all, you're committed to continuous improvement - of processes, products, and your own professional practice - within a safety-first, high-performance team.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, with a minimum of seven years’ relevant industry experience.
High level of proficiency in CAD/CAE software (e.g., SolidWorks, ANSYS or equivalent), with demonstrated capability in 3D modelling, simulation, and design analysis.
Extensive knowledge of Australian Design Rules (ADR), and applicable Australian Standards and vehicle compliance regulations.
Proven experience in the design, development, and testing of heavy vehicles or related systems.
Strong understanding of the products being designed and tested, and their intended use.
Proficient in preparing technical reports and maintaining accurate records, with a commitment to compliance and transparency.
Sound commercial awareness combined with a strong understanding of legal and regulatory obligations.
Highly organised, methodical, and attentive to detail, with excellent planning and time management abilities.
In-depth knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulatory frameworks.
Strong analytical skills to solve problems to determine the best course of action for a project.
Demonstrated experience in scoping, planning, and managing project work, with robust project management skills.
High level of professional integrity and ethical standards.
Proven ability to influence, negotiate, and drive outcomes.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with both internal teams and external stakeholders.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES
Contribute to the profitable operation and growth of Smedley’s Engineers by minimising rework and maximising billable hours.
Ensure compliance with project schedules in relation to design and testing deliverables.
Stay informed of regulatory changes and industry best practices relating to design and testing, both within and outside the organisation.
Review the work of team members as required, identify issues, and provide guidance or training to support continuous improvement.
Respond to customer enquiries regarding design and testing requirements, offering clear and accurate technical advice.
Assess applications for product design and testing to ensure compliance with safety standards and relevant regulations.
Conduct research into emerging technologies that may enhance product safety, performance, or innovation.
Oversee the preparation and completion of test reports and related documentation, ensuring accurate and professional records and outcomes.
Apply advanced CAD/CAE tools to support detailed design, analysis, and verification of heavy vehicle components and systems.
Promote a collaborative team culture, upholding the ethos and values of Smedley’s Engineers in all interactions.
Foster an inclusive and respectful professional work environment for all team members.
Adhere to Smedley’s Engineers' Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies and procedures.
Support a safe working environment by ensuring OHS policies and procedures are current, compliant, and accessible to all staff.
Set clear expectations for team members and actively engage in planning, monitoring, and appraising performance.
