We invite you to join our dynamic team as a Play Therapist or therapeutic play-based Child Counsellor, where you can make a meaningful impact in the lives of children and their families. Ideal candidates will demonstrate empathy, creativity, and a commitment to fostering positive change in children’s lives.
In this rewarding role, you will play a key role in the delivery of quality, coordinated, efficient and evidence-based therapeutic services to children ages 2-12 years old and their families. You will use your expert knowledge to provide assessment, implement high quality therapeutic interventions and strategies and review and evaluate the needs of clients, to enable them to achieve their desired goals and promote their life choices.

Kids Counselling & Play Therapy is a warm service focused on supporting children's mental health and emotional well-being through play based therapeutic practices. We provide a safe and nurturing environment where children can express their feelings and experiences, often using play therapy as a primary method. This approach allows children to communicate and process their emotions in a way that feels natural and engaging to them. Our small team consists of trained counsellors and play therapists who work with children facing a range of challenges, including anxiety, trauma, behavioural issues, and developmental difficulties. Our goal is to empower children and help them to develop coping strategies for a healthier emotional life.
+ Why Join Us?
- This is a sub-contractor role working part-time hours of your choosing (2:30pm - 6:00pm Tuesday to Friday and Sundays available) so you will have loads of free time outside of work hours for yourself.
- Our rates are competitive. You will receive 60% of each client session that you can conduct (excluding GST) which equates to $90 - $114 per session.
- Our therapeutic space is not like any other. You will be provided with a large play therapy room with access to an abundance of resources to do what you do best, support children through play.
- We have systems in place and templates for you to use to make the administrative side of your role stream-lined.
- We have a wait list of clients waiting for you to start.
+ Service Delivery
- Manage a clinical caseload of 6-12 clients (inclusive of people with complex needs) per week independently with a high standard of clinical practice
- Undertake Play Therapy/Counselling assessments, interventions and evaluation, strategies and recommendations that impact positively on a person's engagement, function, safety and participation in their daily activities and occupations within relevant environments
- Respond in a timely manner to all allocated referrals and be able to work within a multi- disciplinary framework
- Consult and collaborate with families, other health professionals, and service providers involved in the client's care in a sensitive, open and timely manner
- Ensure documentation and records are consistent with organisational standards
- Exercise a high degree of professionalism and efficiency in report and support letter writing, case-noting and completion of required templates
- Accurately record all service delivery activities
- Actively participate in regular supervision processes with a Supervisor as required by registration bodies and industry standards.
- Work effectively and cohesively as part of the Kids Counselling & Play Therapy team.
+ Qualifications & Essential Criteria
- Bachelor degree in relevant field (Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Counselling, Social Work)
- If applying for a play therapist role, Certificate, Diploma or Masters in Play Therapy
- If applying for a play therapist role, Membership with an Australian Play Therapy association (APPTA, APTA, PTPA)
- If applying for a counsellor role, Membership with an appropriate registration board (PACFA, ACA) and evidence of training in play-based modalities
- Working with children check (Blue Card)
- This role is a sub-contractor role therefore candidate must have their own Australia Business Number (ABN).
- First Aid certificate is desirable but not essential.
- Additional training in other therapeutic modalities (art therapy, sandtray therapy, theraplay) are desirable but not essential.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including a high level of computer literacy
- Excellent ability to work well independently
- Experience working with children from trauma backgrounds and an understanding of Trauma-Informed practice
- Proven ability to build rapport and communicate effectively with clients
- Exercise a high degree of professionalism including the ability to deal with sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentiality at all times
