Snappy Gum Heritage is seeking a Senior Archaeologist to join our multidisciplinary heritage team. The ideal candidate for this role is an experienced professional who has a strong track-record of leading teams in a cultural heritage setting. If you’re working for a company whose values do not align with yours, it’s worth giving us a call and having a chat.
Our preference is for this to be a full-time role, however part-time will be considered.
About Snappy Gum
At Snappy Gum Heritage, we strive to be ethical in how we approach our work. Our team has diverse academic, professional and personal backgrounds, and together we provide a collaborative and supportive environment that enables us to deliver high-quality work. We are well-regarded in the heritage industry for the way we work in the field, our deliverables and the overall quality of the experience we provide. We have a low staff turnover rate with a happy, stable team.
The benefits of working for Snappy Gum Heritage include:
· Job security with a permanent role in a busy and expanding firm,
· Inclusion in a genuinely friendly and welcoming team environment,
· A varied job description with the ability to tailor day-to-day activities to the type of work you want to do,
· We have a full calendar which gives you some warning on when you’ll be away ahead of time.
· A family-friendly workplace structure – Snappy Gum has been offering a hybrid work environment and flexible working hours since we opened in 2011!
· Attractive renumeration,
· Modern workplace office setting with all equipment provided, and
· Professional development and training opportunities for all staff.
Our teams work on both Aboriginal cultural heritage and historical archaeological projects, providing diversity in:
· Geography, with jobs spanning the entire State from the South West to the Kimberley.
· Type of work, from heritage surveys and excavation to lab analysis and reporting,
· Clients, which include companies in the resource sector, government and not-for-profit organisations, and
· Opportunities, for professional development and training.
About the Role – Senior Archaeologist
As this is a senior role, there is an expectation that the candidate will be an experienced Archaeologist with the ability to lead teams in end-to-end project delivery under the guidance of our Heritage Manager. The role involves a mix of fieldwork, data analysis and report writing.
Other tasks and responsibilities include:
· Studying past cultures through artefacts, or items which people have made, used or modified.
· Organising, authenticating, evaluating and interpreting archaeological data.
· Conducting archaeological surveys and excavations in remote areas.
· Communicating and building relationships with Traditional Owners in the field.
· Investigating sites and artefacts to answer research questions.
· Recording sites through mapping and digital drafting.
· Understanding the application of state and federal legislation, particularly the Aboriginal Heritage Act.
· Preparing technical reports to assist in managing resources
This role will be based out of our Belmont office (and WFH if desired) and will require travel to and from sites throughout the year as required.
Salary range $97,000 +
About You
Ideally, the person we are looking for will have:
· A minimum of four years working within Aboriginal heritage consulting or a similar applicable industry,
· A degree in archaeology with Honours (or equivalent),
· Experience leading heritage survey teams and delivering heritage projects,
· Experience working alongside Traditional Owners,
· Knowledge of heritage legislation in Western Australia,
· Experience working with GIS technology,
· Experience working in remote areas and awareness of the hazards associated with these environments,
· And a valid driver’s license and experience in off-road four-wheel driving. Special points go to those with a manual licence (or willingness to obtain)!
Having said that, we want to find someone who suits our workplace and fits with the values of the company. We value your suitability to join our team over how many years of experience you have or where you have worked previously. We would like to work with someone who is:
· Pragmatic and confident in their ability to make decisions (or ask for help if they are stuck),
· Respectful and ethical in the way they approach their work, especially in relation to working with Traditional Owners,
· A thoughtful leader who can provide guidance to more junior team members,
· Interested in professional development and improving on their skillset and experience (whatever that looks like currently), and
· Collaborative and team-focused.
If this appeals to you, we would love to have a chat and answer any questions you may have. Get in touch by emailing [email protected].
Applications will be accepted by email (the same as above) and should include a cover letter addressing why you think you’re suitable for the role.
We look forward to hearing from you!
