The Role
MQ Health is seeking a Junior/Resident Medical Officer to join our Doctors in Training Program to provide clinical services and participate in the teaching and research environment of MQ Health. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:

• Be mentored and work alongside experienced clinicians in a diverse spectrum of Medical and Surgical specialities
• Collaborate with groups across MQ Health to participate in research projects
• Be exposed to a wide range of clinical conditions and treatment for these, including advanced procedural interventions
• Supervise and train students and other Doctors in Training
• Contribute to educational activities with MQ Health

Rotation opportunities exist across the following terms:

General Medicine including Respiratory/Gastroenterology/Endocrinology; Cardiology; Medical Oncology/Haematology; General Surgery/Plastics; Urology/Gynaecology; ENT/Ophthalmology/Cardiothoracic Surgery/Vascular Surgery; Neurosurgery; Orthopaedics; Relief; Emergency Medicine (Coff's Harbour Secondment).

Key Accountabilities include (Not limited to):

Clinical

• Provide clinical service within the scope of practice granted by the Advisory Committee and approved by the Board to patients of MUH and the Clinics.
• Participate in and fulfil the duties and responsibilities as set out in the HETI term description provided for the term of the Internship.
• Conduct initial assessment of patients including an accurately documented comprehensive patient history and physical examination.
• Formulate a management plan and order appropriate investigations in consultation with supervisors.
• Coordinate and follow up of the patient's management plan to ensure that it is carried out and assessing its outcome.
• Communicate of the patient's assessment and management plan with the medical staff and other members of the team providing care to the patient.
• Communicate with the patient and their family/carers about their condition, assessments and management.
• Review all pathology, radiology and other diagnostic reports and advise the registrar or consultant and/or take appropriate action.
• Liaise and work effectively with allied health professionals involved in patient care including the broader care team.
• Maintain accurate patient documentation and electronic medical records in a timely manner, to reflect clinical decisions, tests, procedures and discharge diagnoses and instructions.
• Participate in ward rounds with the clinical team as required for inpatient care at MUH.
• Participate in formal handover and ensure effective communication (with particular regard to deteriorating patients), while meeting standards of care.
• Comply with MQ Health policies and procedures and the MUH By-laws.
• In consultation with the admitting doctor, ensure appropriate arrangements are made for patients on discharge from MUH to maximise continuity of care, patient-centred care and good health outcomes - including timely and respectful liaison with patient's family, carers and general practitioner as appropriate.
• Adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence based best practice.
• Promptly advise supervising staff, admitting doctor or senior medical staff of any concerns regarding a patient's condition or management.

Administrative

• Attend Discipline, Program and MQ Health meetings as required by supervisor(s) or the Director of Medical Services.
• Participate in Discipline/Program Morbidity and Mortality meetings and other meetings deemed compulsory by supervisor(s) or the Director of Medical Services.
• Provide a minimum of four weeks' notification of planned/intended leave arrangements (personal or work related) ensuring adequate coverage is arranged and signed off by the primary supervisor and the Doctors in Training Manager.
• Notify supervisor(s) immediately of any event that may give rise to a complaint or medico legal claim and complete the appropriate incident notification forms.

Quality and Research Activities

• Participate in Discipline, Program, Hospital and MQ Health quality assurance and risk management projects.
• Ensure compliance with the standards contained within the ACSQHC National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards for accreditation.
• Participate in clinical quality activities - such as peer review, clinical practice audit, root cause analysis etc.
• Participate in Discipline and/or Program Mortality and Morbidity meetings, Sentinel Event meetings, or peer review meetings and root cause analysis teams as requested by your supervisor.
• Systematically review clinical performance of self and discipline.
• Participate in patient complaint reviews and responses to patient complaints.

Supervision, Training and Education

• Participate in multidisciplinary clinical supervision, training and education in patient care environments.
• Assist, supervise and teach medical and health sciences students, if required.
• Attend and actively participate in relevant education sessions and grand rounds.
• If required, present at and represent MQ Health at relevant internal and external conferences, grand rounds, and similar sessions in support of advancing the academic mission of MQ Health.
• Participate in journal clubs for relevant Discipline and/or Program.
• Provide advice and mentorship to individual students and learners where appropriate.

Professional development, continuing education and maintenance of standards

• In partnership with clinical supervisor(s) seek opportunities to ensure development of clinical experience.
• In partnership with clinical supervisor(s) develop and implement a professional development, education and training plan.
• Seek to meet the requirements of internship (as defined by AHPRA) to ensure progression to general medical registration.

• General Registration with Ahpra
• Demonstrated understanding of the patient's perspective and ability to communicate key information to the patient and carers
• Demonstrated interest and aptitude for one or more of the following activities: supervision of students; or delivery of educational activities; or research.
• A strong commitment to multidisciplinary approaches to clinical care and ability to work as part of a team
• Demonstrated experience as a PGY1 doctor in basic procedural techniques such as intravenous cannulation and venesection (PGY2+)
• Completion of ALS2 desirable for PGY2+
