Position Statement
The Mechanical Engineer (Costing Focus) is responsible for delivering high-quality engineering services and drafting in an efficient and effective manner, with a strong emphasis on accurate cost estimation for fabrication and mechanical projects. This role supports tendering, internal quoting, and project execution across a range of engineering disciplines, ensuring technical excellence and commercial viability.
Areas of Responsibility
Maintain individual and workplace safety in alignment with company standards
Interpret and analyse engineering drawings, scopes of work, contractual terms, and client specifications to support estimation activities
Assist in the preparation of accurate material take-offs and clearly defined work scopes for review by the estimating team
Provide technical input to support the development of cost estimates and client quotations
Gather and review subcontractor and supplier pricing for incorporation into project estimates
Support the calculation of operational hours and associated costs in collaboration with estimators and project managers
Generate CAD drawings and technical sketches to aid fabrication detailing and estimation accuracy
Participate in site visits to collect measurements and conduct assessments for estimating and planning purposes
Liaise with clients to support technical understanding and add value to proposed solutions
Maintain and contribute to the accuracy of internal costing databases and estimation tools
Assist in compiling and managing project documentation, including ITPs, MDRs, and QA records, in accordance with KAW’s document control procedures
Collaborate with Project Managers to document and support cost variations throughout project delivery
Coordinate with production and workshop teams to ensure clarity and alignment on estimated scopes
Contribute to continuous improvement in estimating support processes, documentation, and cost control systems
Promote safety, quality, and teamwork across all activities while upholding KAW’s values and professional standards
About You
We're looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Mechanical Engineer with proven experience in cost estimation and project support. You are methodical, analytical, and passionate about engineering excellence. With strong CAD capability and a practical approach to problem-solving, you thrive on delivering reliable estimates and enjoy being involved from concept through to project completion.
Qualifications & Skills
A degree in Mechanical/Structural Engineering or relevant trade and engineering experience
Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings and scopes of work
Advanced MS Excel, Word, and CAD skills (AutoCAD, Inventor, Solidworks etc.)
Excellent communication skills and stakeholder engagement abilities
High attention to detail, time management, and task ownership
Understanding of costing within fabrication, maintenance, or mechanical services
A proactive, collaborative mindset with a commitment to quality and safety
Highly regarded but not essential:
Programming knowledge (Java, Python, etc.)
RIO, BHP, FMG, or MSIC inductions or site access cards

Additional Information
An applicant with current site-specific induction and entry cards such as RIO, BHP, FMG, MSIC will be highly regarded.
This is not a FIFO position, however, an applicant who is willing to relocate to Karratha may be considered for a short-term FIFO engagement to assist through probationary periods and during relocation.
