The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to recruit suitably experienced Work Health & Safety professionals for our Census Work Health and Safety Team:
- Work Health and Safety Officer (APS5)
- Senior Work Health and Safety Adviser (APS6)
- Principal Work Health and Safety Adviser (EL1)
These are temporary positions up to 18 months duration.
About the roles
As a Work Health and Safety Officer or Adviser, you will provide guidance on work health and safety matters, management and compliance to support the 2026 Australian Census workforce. This workforce is large and diverse, with 30,000 people working in the field across Australia to support the public to participate in the 2026 Census.
You will support a safe, successful Census delivery against the WHS legislative framework and the ABS Work Health and Safety Management System. You will have strong capability in stakeholder engagement and an ability to build and maintain effective working relationships to support collaboration and a safety-first culture.
About you
The successful candidates will possess all, or most of the following:
- excellent communication skills and a skilled user of computer and telephone systems
- ability to achieve results in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
- capacity to work with speed and accuracy within established procedures
- ability to remain composed and manages stress effectively
- capacity to respond positively to differences and communicate respectfully with a diverse range of stakeholders
- experience in incident response or WHS incident management
- ability to hold and maintain, or be able to receive a Baseline Security Clearance.
Qualifications in Work Health and Safety or Public Safety will be highly regarded.
To be considered at the EL1 or APS6 level, you will be an effective leader and have demonstrated capability in work health and safety risk management, regulatory engagements, incident investigation, hazard management and audit.
To be considered at the APS5 level, you will have transferable organisation, communication and information management skills.
Additional Information
The Field Safety Response Line is embedded within the larger Census Work Health and Safety Team and is responsible for providing first-line response to staff requests for assistance during authorised field hours. During operational periods, the Census Field Safety Response Line will be open during all authorised field hours for Census field workers - up to 8.30pm local time weekdays, weekends and public holidays. As a member of this team, you are expected to share your availability across these hours to ensure consistent support for your team’s delivery.
Salary information
Principal Work Health and Safety Adviser (EL1): $117,593 - $135,935
Senior Work Health and Safety Adviser (APS6): $95,714 - $108,092
Work Health and Safety Officer (APS5): $85,204 - $95,705
Plus 15.4% employer contribution to super.
