We are seeking a highly motivated and practical Investigations Analyst to join the Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman’s (OFWO) Criminal Investigations Team within the Criminal Investigations Branch. This is a new role, and you will have the opportunity to shape the culture and work practices of the area.
Full-time and part-time hours and hybrid work arrangements are available. Offers will be based on candidate performance and operational requirements.
A merit list may also be formed as a result of this exercise and may be used to fill similar vacancies in the next 18 months.

Eligibility
- To be eligible for employment with the OFWO you must be an Australian citizen.
- The successful candidate must hold a current Australian Government Security Clearance (AGSVA) or be willing to undergo and obtain a Baseline security clearance.
A range of other conditions may be required depending on the role you are applying for.
About the Team
The Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB) has been established in response to the Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Closing Loopholes) Act 2023, which introduced a criminal offence for employers intentionally failing to pay employee entitlements. The OFWO is responsible for investigating contraventions of the offence and referring matters to the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP). The CIB is responsible for establishing the systems, processes, capabilities and policies required to effectively operate as a dual civil and criminal regulator.
The Criminal Investigations Team (Team) within the CIB is responsible for conducting intelligence-led investigations of matters to a criminal standard through to delivery of briefs of evidence. This is a high-profile area with interest from the Australian public and stakeholder groups within and external to the OFWO. You’ll need to be comfortable working in an environment with a high level of scrutiny.
Typical Duties
Reporting to an Assistant Director of Criminal Investigations and as part of a multi-disciplinary investigations team, the duties of the roles include (however, are not limited to):
- Conducting complex analytical assessments, operational planning and development of support products for investigators
- Conducting research and drafting reports and briefings to identify patterns, trends, and areas of concern
- Working with the CIB’s Evidence Management Team on data collection, organisation, and analysis
- Liaising with other government agencies to gather relevant information for case analysis
- Accompanying investigators on site activities to support investigative functions
- Contributing to the development of improved processes and procedures for investigations
- Supporting criminal investigations in accordance with Commonwealth frameworks, the Australian Government Investigations Standards and relevant legislation.
Interstate and overnight travel may be required in this role. You may also be required to regularly travel to your closest capital city office.
Selection Criteria
To be successful in the role, you will possess:
- Experience in providing research, analysis and support for complex civil and/or criminal matters, including demonstrated ability to identify patterns, trends, and potential areas of concern for investigation
- Experience in preparing analytical reports, briefing materials, and support documentation including demonstrated use of i2 Analyst Notebook or similar link chart software
- Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to think critically, exercise judgement, identify risks and deliver outcomes
- Well-developed written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interpret legislation, articulate complex information and communicate effectively with a variety of audiences
- Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with track record of delivering outcomes
Desirable Criteria
- Vocational qualification(s) in Government Investigations (or a willingness to acquire qualifications as funded by the OFWO) is desirable and highly relevant.
- Knowledge of the Fair Work Act 2009 and the Australian workplace relations framework is desirable, but not essential. Candidates without a workplace relations background will need to demonstrate the ability to apply their skills to this context.
