The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Senior Aboriginal Workforce Adviser - projects and programs to fill a vital role within the Aboriginal Workforce Unit.

This is an Aboriginal designated position, classified under 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.

About the Business Unit

The Aboriginal Justice group is committed to driving systemic change in the justice system, to deliver better outcomes for Aboriginal Victorians. The group works in partnership with Victorian Aboriginal communities and is guided by principles of Aboriginal self-determination. The Koori Justice Unit (KJU) is a unit within the Aboriginal Justice Group of the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS), which has been established to help realise a clear vision of a fair and accessible justice system for Aboriginal people.

The Aboriginal Workforce Unit (AWU) provides ongoing support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Aboriginal) employees within the department and manages a range of Aboriginal employment initiatives. The AWU contributes towards the innovation of new programs and policies to strengthen career development and cultural diversity and inclusion across the department, as well as to increase the number of Aboriginal staff within the department.

About the role:

As the Project Support Officer Provide day-to-day coordination and administrative support to KJU programs, including scheduling, logistics, document preparation, and internal reporting.

Reporting to the Manager, Aboriginal Workforce Unit, the Senior Aboriginal Workforce Adviser - projects and programs will be responsible for the management and delivery of Aboriginal employment projects and programs that the AWU is responsible for rolling out over the next two years as part of the Aboriginal Workforce Strategy 2024-2027.

You will be responsible for a wide range engagement and delivery with departmental, leading the delivery of Aboriginal employment initiatives and the Aboriginal Staff Network.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating events and promotional activities to support program objectives.
  • Delivering communications, reporting, and cultural support measures across initiatives.
  • Overseeing logistics, documentation, and governance for funded projects.
  • coordinating meetings, workshops, and consultations, and managing communications.
  • This role is focused on operational delivery, program management, staff engagement, and event coordination.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal community, both society and culture, and the issues impacting it.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and work effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal community.
  • Proven resource and people management skills, including demonstrated ability to build effective high-performing teams and to successfully lead change.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of employment and/or policy strategies.
