The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly motivated Technical Officer to join the Immune Memory Laboratory within the Department of Immunology, located at Monash University’s School of Translational Medicine at the Alfred Hospital Precinct. Working under the guidance of Professor David Tarlinton, this role supports ground-breaking research into how the body creates and maintains long-term antibody-based immunity — with direct relevance to vaccination, autoimmune diseases, and antibody-producing cancers like multiple myeloma.
You will play a critical role in the day-to-day operation of the lab, supporting experimental work, managing laboratory equipment and materials, and contributing to data collection and analysis. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong technical capability, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in immunology and biomedical research.
Your Role
As Technical Officer, you will:
- Support laboratory experiments including preparation of specimens, chemical handling, and setup and maintenance of scientific equipment
- Assist with small animal model studies, data collection, and routine analysis in accordance with approved protocols and safety standards
- Manage laboratory operations, including ordering supplies, maintaining lab spaces, and disposing of hazardous materials appropriately
- Provide technical guidance to staff and students on equipment use and contribute to continuous improvement in lab practices
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A BSc (Honours) in a relevant field or equivalent experience, with strong laboratory and technical skills
- Excellent organisation and time management, with the ability to handle multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy and compliance
- Strong teamwork and communication skills, with a proactive attitude and familiarity with OHS and standard operating procedures
The Immune Memory Laboratory investigates how immune memory is formed, maintained, and reactivated — processes at the heart of long-term immunity. While memory provides essential protection after infection or vaccination, it can also contribute to persistent immune disorders like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or fuel cancers of antibody-producing cells.
The lab’s work spans both healthy immune responses and the mechanisms behind immune dysfunction, aiming to improve health outcomes through targeted research.
