The Opportunity

We are seeking a driven and meticulous Research Officer to support a ground-breaking program at the forefront of gastrointestinal cancer research. Based within the Gastrointestinal Translational Research Laboratory at the Alfred precinct, this role plays a pivotal part in advancing screening and surveillance through the Alfred Cancer Biobank, with direct impact on the early detection and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers.

Working as part of a translational research team, you will support a wide range of laboratory-based activities—spanning tissue banking, sample preparation for molecular analysis, and maintenance of preclinical models. You will also contribute to research infrastructure, including the coordination and processing of biospecimens for downstream discovery science and biomarker development.

This is a unique opportunity to be embedded in a collaborative research environment where your work will directly inform clinical practice through rigorous laboratory science.

About You

We are looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and is motivated by the real-world impact of their work. You bring proven technical capabilities in histology and tissue processing, with particular expertise in cryotomy and microtomy. You're confident in working with both human and preclinical model samples and are experienced in laboratory techniques that support in vivo research workflows.

You have a keen eye for detail, a commitment to research integrity and lab safety, and a deep respect for the ethical dimensions of translational research. Your ability to engage sensitively with patients, as well as your clear communication and documentation skills, will be critical to your success in this role.

You will bring:

  • A degree in a biomedical or related field or equivalent combination of experience and training
  • High-level proficiency in tissue sectioning techniques, including cryotomy and microtomy
  • Demonstrated experience with preclinical research models, including routine care and procedural support
  • Competence in handling and preparing both human and animal-derived biospecimens
  • Excellent communication, organisational and documentation skills
  • A sound understanding of research protocols, ethics compliance and laboratory best practice
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams

What We Offer

This 12-month fixed-term appointment offers the chance to contribute to a nationally significant study and to work within a dynamic and supportive academic research environment. You'll be based at the Alfred Research Alliance, a thriving hub for translational and clinical research embedded within Monash’s Sub-Faculty of Translational Medicine and Public Health.
