The Opportunity

We’re seeking a proactive and highly organised ICU Research Project Officer to coordinate two major multi-centre clinical trials that will influence intensive care practice across Australia and New Zealand.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a research professional with clinical trial experience to drive the day-to-day execution of high-impact ICU research — from site coordination and ethics to data management and reporting — within a fast-paced and collaborative research environment.

The Role

As the ICU Research Project Officer, you will be the central coordinator for two national randomised controlled trials:

GUARDS – evaluating the use of dexamethasone in patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

SODA-BIC – investigating sodium bicarbonate infusion for metabolic acidosis in critically ill ICU patients

You will be responsible for managing trial operations across multiple clinical sites, maintaining study documentation, facilitating ethics submissions, supporting data quality, and liaising with clinical partners, research staff and the project leadership team. This role is hands-on, dynamic, and vital to the success of both trials.

You will:

Coordinate and lead day-to-day operations of the GUARDS and SODA-BIC trials across multiple ICU sites, ensuring adherence to timelines, protocols, and regulatory requirements

Manage trial documentation and ethics processes, including the preparation of submissions, contracts, protocols, monitoring reports and study tools

Build strong relationships with investigators, clinical partners and site staff, acting as the primary liaison to support site engagement, issue resolution and project continuity

Contribute to data quality, project reporting and administrative oversight, including financial tracking, meeting coordination and site monitoring (local and interstate travel may be required)

To thrive in this role, you will have:

Proven experience in coordinating multi-site clinical trials, ideally in an ICU or acute care setting, with a strong understanding of clinical research processes and regulatory requirements

Excellent project management and organisational skills, with the ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and ensure delivery of complex trial activities on time

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with investigators, site staff and external stakeholders across diverse settings

A degree in a health or research-related field, or equivalent relevant experience, along with confidence using research databases, ethics platforms, and standard office software

This role sits within the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre (ANZIC-RC), part of Monash University’s School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. Based at the Alfred Centre, the ANZIC-RC is one of the region’s leading critical care research hubs — known for running large-scale, practice-changing clinical trials in ICU medicine. You’ll work alongside experienced clinical trialists and have the support of a highly collaborative research operations team.
