The Opportunity

EPC Contractor at the forefront of Australia's energy transformation, delivering major transmission infrastructure and grid-connected renewable projects. Due to ongoing growth, they are seeking an experienced Principal Primary Engineer - Electrical to join our team and lead the design and development of primary electrical systems for high-voltage substations and transmission assets, up to 500kV.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and deliver the detailed design of primary electrical systems for high-voltage substations (66kV - 500kV), from concept to commissioning

Manage the preparation of engineering deliverables including single-line diagrams, general arrangement drawings, control and protection interfaces, and technical specification

Ensure designs meet project specifications, relevant national/international standards (e.g., AS/NZS, IEC, IEEE), and grid connection requirements

Coordinate with internal teams (civil, structural, secondary systems, protection) and external stakeholders (utilities, consultants, clients)

Conduct feasibility studies, site layout optimisation, and engineering risk assessments

Review and sign off on engineering documentation, support construction teams with technical queries, and oversee site-based commissioning where required

Mentor and develop junior engineers, promoting technical excellence and continuous improvement within the team

Skills & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering

10+ years of experience in primary electrical design for high-voltage substations and transmission systems

Technical understanding of substation configurations, HV plant, and transmission network design

Competency in design tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP, PLS-CADD, or similar

Demonstrated experience developing equipment specifications, reviewing vendor drawings, and supporting procurement processes

Familiarity with Australian energy market requirements, transmission operator (e.g., AEMO) standards, and NER compliance

Excellent stakeholder management, report writing, and documentation skills

Desirable:

CPEng/RPEQ or Professional Engineer (PE) certification

Experience with renewable energy grid integration, battery storage, or hybrid systems

Exposure to international transmission projects or multi-regional standards

Knowledge of project delivery in EPCM or EPC environments
