About us:

The Australian Alliance to End Homelessness (AAEH) is an independent champion for preventing and ending homelessness in Australia. Specifically, we work to prevent, reduce, and end homelessness by ensuring that everyone has access to the housing and support they need, so that any future incidents of homelessness are rare, brief, and a one-time occurrence. We recognise that the scale of homelessness in Australia is both preventable and solvable and that despite the common misconception to the contrary, we can end homelessness in Australia.

Since 2013, we have supported individuals, organisations, governments and local communities across Australia to work collaboratively across sectors to end homelessness – not just at an individual level, but systemically. Specifically, we work to prevent, reduce and end homelessness by ensuring that everyone has access to the housing and support they need, so that any future incidents of homelessness are rare, brief and once-off. This is how we define an end to homelessness.

Job description:

The Manager, People and Culture role is a key role in maintaining and developing effective and efficient HR practices and processes that support management and staff in ensuring the strategic priorities of the organisation are realised. The successful candidate will be experienced in working in a dynamic and diverse environment and is passionate about ensuring staff are fully supported to reach their full potential.

Key responsibilities of this position include recruitment of staff, maintaining and developing effective and efficient HR policies and procedures, supporting staff and management in ongoing performance and development activities, and developing and maintaining the organisational workforce development plan in conjunction with Management and the Board.

What you'll do:

Human Resources Operations

Maintain HR systems, records, and reporting to ensure data integrity and compliance.

Culture and Engagement

Support the development and implementation of strategies to build a positive, values-driven organisational culture.

Lead employee engagement initiatives and coordinate regular feedback mechanisms (e.g. engagement surveys, pulse checks).

Workforce Development

Identify staff development needs and coordinate shared learning and development activities across teams.

Support line managers in delivering effective staff performance and development planning.

Policy and Compliance

Maintain HR policies, procedures, and templates in line with legislation and best practice.

Support compliance with relevant industrial instruments, employment law, and organisational standards.

Employee Relations and Wellbeing

Provide timely and pragmatic support to managers and employees to address issues and resolve concerns in a respectful, professional manner.

Coordinate wellbeing and inclusion initiatives and support a psychologically safe work environment.

People Projects and Systems

Lead or contribute to HR projects including workforce planning, HRIS implementation, or reward framework development.

Act as the HR system administrator and lead continuous improvement of people systems and tools.

Collaboration and Support

Partner with the Leadership Team to align people practices with strategic goals.

Support a geographically dispersed workforce, ensuring consistent HR support across sites and locations.

What you'll bring:

Demonstrated experience in a generalist HR or People & Culture role, preferably within a community services or NFP setting.

Strong knowledge of contemporary HR practices, employment legislation, and industrial relations frameworks.

Exposure to the SCHADS Award and other relevant legislation.

Experience supporting recruitment, onboarding, employee development, and performance management processes.

Ability to build trust and credibility with staff and leaders and provide balanced and pragmatic HR advice.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to manage sensitive or complex issues with discretion.

Proven organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.

What's in it for you:

This position can be located anywhere in Australia with the ability to work from a virtual/home office location without the standard support available at a business office – however, it would ideally be in Perth or Adelaide to support the teams based there.

Generous leave entitlements, including 5 weeks of annual leave
