Terrapin puts what matters in motion. Exploring beyond the borders of contemporary puppetry, our purpose is to make lives better, shift realities and create connections, and we’ve been doing it for over 45 years.

As we build worlds, create stories and craft characters we connect contemporary artists with intergenerational audiences locally, nationally and internationally, with work in theatres, public space, and projects that drive social change and connection.

We’re now looking for a Business Manager to join our small, passionate team, and help shape Terrapin’s next chapter.

About the role

Reporting to the CEO/Executive Producer and working closely with the Artistic Director, the Business Manager is responsible for the financial, operational, and administrative backbone of the company. This is a key leadership role that ensures Terrapin remains a sustainable, well-governed, and future-focused organisation.

Key responsibilities

Lead budgeting, financial reporting and compliance

Oversee payroll, HR and company systems

Serve as Company Secretary and support the Board

Maintain governance, policy and risk frameworks

Contribute to strategic and business planning

Support funding applications, contracting and acquittals

Help us embed sustainable and evaluative practices

Foster a safe, respectful, collaborative workplace

About you

You’re a systems-thinker who understands what it takes to turn bold ideas into real-world delivery.

You thrive in a dynamic environment, bringing extensive experience in both finance and operations—and you’re comfortable managing the detail while keeping an eye on the bigger picture.

You might come from the arts, not-for-profit or small business sectors—but more importantly, you’re practical, collaborative, and interested in supporting creative work that connects with all kinds of people.

Essential

Demonstrated experience in financial and operational management

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Familiarity with governance, compliance, and reporting with an eye for detail

A collaborative, solutions-focused mindset

Desirable

Experience in the arts or cultural sector

Knowledge of Xero, payroll systems, and grant reporting

Based in or willing to relocate to Hobart, Tasmania

Why join us?

Terrapin is part of the National Performing Arts Partnership Framework, receiving multi-year co-funding from both State and Federal Governments. We’re currently in the second four-year cycle of an eight-year partnership, taking us through to 2028.

We’re a small, values-led team making big impact—through bold artistry, deep community engagement, and a clear purpose: to make lives better, shift realities, and create connections.

How to apply

Please read the info pack before submitting an application, the info pack can be found here: https://terrapin.org.au/join-the-team

Applications can be submitted via the Terrapin website or by email.

If applying via email, send:

Cover letter (maximum three pages, addressing the selection criteria)

Current resume (maximum two pages, including two referees with their phone and email contact details)

Subject line: Business Manager Application

Applications close: Monday 28 July 2025, 10am

Terrapin encourages applications from First Nations people, people with disability, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and LGBTQIA+ individuals. We are committed to a workplace that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.

Note: Terrapin is currently housed in a heritage building where there is an elevator and ramp access to the office level. However, the rehearsal space is up some very narrow steep stairs. Unfortunately, this may preclude some applicants from being in the rehearsal room for showings of new performances. Screen viewing access from the admin office would be arranged on these occasions and while not ideal it does mean an applicant who cannot use stairs could still succeed in this position.

If, after reading the information pack, you have any further questions, please contact Recruitment Advisor, Annette Downs: [email protected]

Online interviews will take place the week of Monday 4 August 2025.
