Our Histology Facility is a vital resource for researchers seeking high-quality histological services. With a team committed to excellence and collaboration, we aim to empower our clients and further the field of histology through meticulous work and innovative solutions. Whether you’re starting a new project or need specific technical assistance, our facility is prepared to support your scientific journey. The Histology Facility provides specialised histology performed by our experienced staff, which include sample preparation, embedding, sectioning and a range of staining techniques, including immunohistochemistry and spatial cell biology.
Role Purpose / Responsibilities:
Applications are invited for the position of Histology Facility Manager within the Scientific Services Division at QIMR Berghofer. This leadership role is responsible for managing a customer-focused, cutting-edge histology service supporting medical research across the Institute.
The Histology Facility Manager will report to the General Manager of Scientific Services and will lead a dedicated team within the Histology Facility. The successful candidate will work closely with researchers and other core facilities, including the Microscopy and Spatial Cell Biology Facility, to deliver high-quality and innovative histological and spatial biology services.
The following duties will apply but not limited to:
- Tissue embedding and sectioning (including tissue microarrays)
- Histological staining (e.g., H&E, special stains)
- Immunohistochemistry (DAB, multiplex fluorescence, tyramide signal amplification)
- Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH)
- Spatial cell biology techniques (e.g., cyclic immunofluorescence and transcriptomics)
- Manage and deliver a broad range of histology services, including:
- Provide expert advice to clients on experiment planning and histology methodology.
- Ensure excellent communication with clients regarding progress updates and result delivery.
- Collaborate with researchers and managers to align services with research needs.
- Drive protocol development and implementation of innovative technologies.
- Administer and manage budgets, supplies, and maintenance of facility equipment.
- Undertake hands-on laboratory work where necessary.
- Foster a positive, high-performing team environment, including supervision, coaching, and conflict resolution.
About you:
You will have a PhD in a life science discipline (or equivalent), with extensive experience in histology services within research or clinical core facilities. Your background would include proven leadership and supervisory experience, with a strong commitment to building and supporting high-performing teams. You’ll bring excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong organisational abilities, and a demonstrated capacity to manage multiple priorities while maintaining effective stakeholder relationships.
Ideally, you’ll also have training or experience in workplace communication, team development, or business management, and a proactive, service-focused mindset committed to continuous improvement.
Remuneration: Salary range is $118,347 to $129,016 plus super and generous salary packaging. This is a full-time, permanent appointment.
