The Opportunity

As a Building Surveyor at the City of Perth, you will play a key role in ensuring the City meets its objectives for assessing, preparing, and issuing permits, certificates, and licences in accordance with relevant statutes, City of Perth Local Laws, policies, guidelines, and procedures.

Reporting to the Principal Building Surveyor within our Development Approvals team, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting inspections, monitoring, and auditing of existing building stock to ensure compliance with the City's obligations under the Building Act, working under limited direction;
  • Assessing and processing building applications in accordance with statutory requirements, City policies, and industry standards;
  • Supporting the building surveyor team with the development of work programs, policies, and procedures to improve service delivery; and
  • Consulting, advising, and negotiating with senior building consultants and practitioners to resolve technical issues related to development proposals, approvals, and clearances.

About You

To succeed in this role, you will possess:

  • Knowledge and experience working with the Building Code of Australia, related Australian Standards, relevant building approval processes and statutory requirements with a demonstrated ability to systematically assess complex submissions for compliance with the Building Act, Building Regulations and Building Standards;
  • Sound knowledge of performance-based principles (i.e. fire engineering), building design, construction and services requirements, and building standards;
  • Strong problem solving, negotiation, teamwork and staff mentoring skills to ensure the successful delivery of complex projects and staff development; and
  • Excellent organisational skills and judgment, including an ability to work on multiple projects, prioritise workloads and meet deadlines despite competing priorities.

Eligibility

To be eligible to work for us, you will need to demonstrate:

  • A right to work in Australia (e.g. a birth certificate, current passport or current visa);
  • Currently completing a Tertiary Degree or an Advanced Diploma in Building Surveying or appropriate equivalent level qualification;
  • Eligible for Registration as a Building Surveyor Practitioner Level 2 or Level 1;
  • A current ‘C’ class Australian drivers licence; and
  • A satisfactory National Police Clearance (dated within 3 months).
