This role has been established to explore initiatives that enhance support for students navigating the complexities of English language proficiency, cultural expectations, and professional placement readiness.
The International Student Support and Placement Readiness Coordinator will work collaboratively with academic staff, practicum supervisors, mentor teachers, and professional experience teams to develop and devise programs and support mechanisms, that facilitate and ensure international students are well-prepared for success in school and early childhood settings. This may include identifying and responding to language or cultural challenges, providing individualised and group-based support, and developing strategies to build student confidence and capability before and during placements.
This role is critical to understanding and maintaining the quality and integrity of our programs, upholding the expectations of accrediting bodies, and ensuring equitable outcomes for all students. Key duties and responsibilities include:
- Coordinate project activities using appropriate methodologies to achieve defined outcomes.
- Identify students at risk of underperformance in professional placement for reasons such as English language proficiency, cultural unfamiliarity, academic preparedness, and implement targeted support strategies.
- Design and deliver tailored workshops, tutorials, and resources focused on professional communication, cultural competence in Australian education settings, and placement expectations.
- Drive data informed decisions in partnership with university staff to develop evidence-based recommendations for enhancing support services and improving institutional processes for international students.
- Develop and advise individualised mentoring and academic support programmes for international students to build confidence and competence ahead of and during professional experience placements.
- Collaborate closely with unit coordinators, practicum supervisors, and the Professional Experience team to ensure consistent expectations and coordinated support strategies for international students.
- Support mentor teachers and school supervisors by providing guidance on cultural sensitivity and practical strategies for supporting international pre-service teachers.
- Liaise with Curtin English and student services to understand, document and coordinate referral pathways for language development, wellbeing support, or academic skills assistance.
- Monitor student progress during placement preparation and placement periods, intervening early where needed and contributing to final readiness assessments (e.g. LANTITE, AFGT, etc.)
- Collect and analyse feedback from students, mentors, and school partners to inform support practices and placement preparation.
- Contribute to policy and procedural enhancements related to international student placements and professional experience quality assurance.
- Promote inclusive teaching and assessment practices within the school to foster a supportive environment for students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
- Perform other related duties as required within the scope of the role.
We are looking for someone with:
- A relevant degree in Education, TESOL, Educational Psychology, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience working with international students in higher education or professional settings, particularly in relation to language development, cultural adjustment, or academic support.
- Strong understanding of the Australian education system, teacher professional standards, and requirements for professional placements.
- Proven ability to support students’ development of English language and intercultural communication skills for academic and professional contexts.
- Experience in designing and delivering workshops, tutorials, or support programs that enhance student readiness and success.
- Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with academic staff, professional teams, and external stakeholders such as schools and early learning centres.
- Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and respond effectively to emerging challenges.
Desirable:
- A teaching qualification and/or experience as a teacher or teacher educator in Australia.
- Experience supporting Initial Teacher Education students on practicum or placement.
- Familiarity with professional accreditation requirements and quality assurance processes related to teacher education.
- Experience in staff development or mentoring in education or intercultural contexts.
