The Department:
This Federal Government department develops and delivers key policy and program initiatives that shape Australia’s workforce, education, and economic future. The media team supports high-profile programs and maintains strong working relationships with ministerial offices and executive leaders.

The Role:
As Assistant Director, Media, you will lead and support the delivery of high-quality, timely media services across the department. Reporting to the Media Director, you’ll work closely with senior leaders, Ministerial offices and internal stakeholders to shape media responses, develop proactive opportunities, and manage reputational risk. You’ll also manage and mentor junior staff while fostering a collaborative and responsive team culture.

This role can be based in the following office locations:

• Brisbane – Meanjin Country
• Canberra – Ngunnawal Country
• Sydney – Gadigal Country

Please note this Department offers a flexible working arrangement and part of your working week can be worked from home. This is not a remote working role and you must be able to attend the office for part of your week (2 to 3 days).

Role Responsibilities:

• Lead the development of proactive media strategies and opportunities across the portfolio
• Oversee the preparation of media materials including talking points, media releases, and briefings
• Respond to media enquiries and advise senior stakeholders on media management and messaging
• Provide strategic communications advice in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
• Manage and support the performance and development of media team staff

What you’ll bring:

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Proven experience delivering strategic media services in complex or high-profile environments
• Strong leadership skills and the ability to build trust across internal and external stakeholders
• The ability to distil complex policy issues into clear, accurate and engaging content
• Qualifications in communications, journalism or a related discipline are desirable
• Previous experience in government or Ministerial environments will be highly regarded
