THE CLIENT

Our client, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), is the Australian Government statutory agency responsible for the management and regulation of all agricultural and veterinary (AgVet) chemical products in Australia. The APVMA regulates agricultural and veterinary chemicals to manage the risks of pests and diseases for the Australian community and to protect Australia’s trade and the health and safety of people, animals and the environment.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This is an exciting opportunity to step into a high-impact leadership role as Assistant Director – Environment. In this position, you will undertake critical assessments of the environmental safety of AgVet chemical products. Providing input to the development and implementation of strategies, operational policies, priorities and work practices for the RAC program to achieve results in line with APVMA operational goals.

Identifying appropriate scope and regulatory approach for risk assessments to be undertaken in accordance with legislative requirements, APVMA principles of regulatory science quality and relevant international best practice.

Assisting in making regulatory decisions in accordance with the legislation and delegations.

Managing staff in the Environment team as required.

Using project management, efficient workflow and related practices to provide timely inputs to the work of the Program.

Preparing high level written material incorporating scientific/technical considerations to contribute to briefs to decision makers, correspondence and other corporate documents as required.

Undertaking special projects related to environmental safety under the direction of the Director or Executive Director.

SELECTION CRITERIA

To be a strong contender for the role, you will have:

Essential Requirements:

Appropriate tertiary qualifications relevant to environmental toxicology, environmental chemistry, or related sciences.

An in-depth understanding of the regulatory framework governing the assessment and approval of agricultural and veterinary chemicals, gained through experience with the APVMA or similar regulatory agencies.

A thorough knowledge of the use of chemicals in the context of Good Agricultural or Veterinary Practices.

Ability to readily balance and prioritise workloads and tasks to deliver high quality outcomes in a timely manner.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with proven ability to evaluate complex information, provide pragmatic advice and propose regulatory decisions in both data-rich and data-poor environments.

Ability to work cohesively and use initiative in a team environment using effective interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and confidently with a high level of impact, particularly in a written format.
