As the Operational Risk Team Leader, you will help safeguard Wollongong's people, infrastructure, and future through proactive risk oversight.
In this leadership role, you'll guide and inspire a small team and be dedicated to identifying and managing risks across Council's operations, services, and community assets-ensuring we deliver smarter, safer outcomes every day.
You'll lead by example, championing a proactive risk culture, driving continuous improvement, and supporting key governance functions that protect what matters most to our city.
This is a Permanent Full-Time position. Salary from $101,076.32 up to $120,709.44 per annum plus superannuation (Salary package will be assessed based on skills, experience and qualifications).
How you'll make a difference
As the Operational Risk Team Leader, you'll lead your team to deliver high-quality risk and insurance services across Council. You'll coordinate day-to-day operations, guide staff development, and ensure service standards are met. You'll play a key role in managing Council's insurance portfolio, handling claims, and liaising with brokers, insurers, and legal representatives. You'll also support the development and testing of Council's Business Continuity and Crisis Management Plans, provide expert advice on risk practices, and use data insights to drive continuous improvement. This is a hands-on leadership role where your expertise will directly contribute to a safer, more resilient Wollongong.
About you
You're a confident and experienced risk professional with relevant qualifications and a strong track record in operational risk, insurance, and claims management. You bring deep knowledge of risk frameworks, legislation, and best practices, and you know how to turn that expertise into practical solutions that protect people, assets, and services. A natural leader, you've successfully led teams, inspired performance, and built a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. You're also a skilled communicator and educator - able to engage stakeholders, resolve complex issues, and drive risk awareness across the organisation. With a solid understanding of business continuity and crisis management, and the flexibility to travel across the Wollongong LGA, you're ready to lead with purpose and make a real impact.
