About the role
The Student Counselling and Wellbeing Lead is responsible for the strategic management and coordination of student counselling and wellbeing services across TAFE SA. This includes the development and implementation of a comprehensive Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy and related initiatives, aligned with the Student Success Priority Plan and TAFE SA’s 10-Year Strategic Plan.

The role provides leadership and professional oversight to a team of qualified counselling professionals, fostering the delivery of high quality, evidence-based, student centred, and ethical support services. It also involves the management of key strategic projects, including associated budgets and resources.

The Student Counselling and Wellbeing Lead delivers expert advice and high-level performance analysis on counselling service delivery and student wellbeing outcomes, supporting informed decision making at the executive level.

By collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders, you will contribute to fostering a positive learning environment and promoting student wellbeing initiatives across TAFE SA.

Key Outcomes of the role include:

  • Provide leadership and professional supervision to counselling staff in delivering high-quality wellbeing services to TAFE SA students. This includes performance management, as well as coordinating and delivering professional development initiatives focused on student wellbeing.
  • Proactively engage with, and offer expert consultancy to, both corporate and education directorates to strengthen student wellbeing outcomes and enhance TAFE SA’s reputation as a leader in student mental health and wellbeing within the vocational education and training sector.
  • Lead the continuous improvement and implementation of student wellbeing support systems, ensuring practices are evidence-based and aligned with emerging sector trends.
  • Supervise and support counselling staff in managing complex and high-risk student wellbeing issues, providing expert guidance on mental health incidents in accordance with TAFE SA’s relevant policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Monitor and analyse emerging trends and issues in student mental health and wellbeing, contributing professional insight to the development and refinement of governance structures, policies, procedures, and operational practices.


Key Selection Criteria:

  • Significant experience in leading the development, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of Student Mental Health and Wellbeing strategies, services, and projects.
  • Proven capability in performance management and providing professional guidance to teams responsible for academic support, emotional wellbeing, and crisis intervention in a counselling context.
  • Extensive experience exercising professional judgement in complex and high-risk scenarios, including the effective use of technology and flexible service delivery models to support diverse student cohorts, including those in regional and remote locations.
  • Sound knowledge of student counselling theory and mental health and wellbeing frameworks, along with a strong understanding of contemporary practices, techniques, and tools relevant to the sector.

Special Conditions
The successful applicant is required to demonstrate having a valid DHS Working With Children Check (WWCC) prior to being employed. Applicants who do not hold a WWCC will need to apply at Department of Human Services (DHS).

  • Some out of hours work may be required during peak periods in line with business needs.
  • Some Intra/interstate travel and overnight absences may be required.
  • The incumbent may need to travel to an alternative location, when required.
  • Incumbent will be required to participate in the department's Performance Development Program.
  • Eligibility to work in Australia.
