The Role
We are seeking a high performing, motivated and enthusiastic APS 5 Maintenance Officer (MO) to join the Regional Maintenance Centre North East (RMC-NE) team. In this role, you will contribute to providing maintenance services to the Products being Supported (PbS) under the Maritime Sustainment Model (MSM). A sound trade background coupled with excellent communication and interpersonal skills will have a direct impact on delivering capability to the PbS. This role requires a high level of trade and / or maintenance experience to support quality management through application of a governance and assurance of vessels in maintenance.
The Maintenance Officer will:
- Act as a Maintenance Activity assurance officer within the RMC-NE with responsibility for tracking key milestones through the vessel maintenance activity.
- Be expected to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all relevant internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide assurance of the RMC-NE Technical Support Network to ensure vessel compliance with relevant classification and safety requirements and assist in ensuring the delivery of high quality services and maritime products to the PbS.
- The successful candidate for this position will be required to work variable hours within an office and shipyard environment, and must possess the ability to work autonomously within the limits of their competence and delegation. The role will require a level of physical fitness to undertake vessel inspections, conduct outdoor work and participate in sea trials on board vessels.
About our Team
In response to the Australian Government developing a nationwide naval shipbuilding enterprise the MSM is being implemented to realise Plan Galileo; Maritime System Division’s national, long term approach to sustainment of the naval fleet.
The RMC-NE is located in Tropical North Queensland, Cairns and will provide capability support to the Royal Australian Navy from the Cairns maritime precinct. The focus of this organisation will be on enhanced collaboration, co-ordination, workforce development and expansion to build the capability and capacity needed to meet increasing ship maintenance demands.

As a Maintenance Officer within the RMC-NE team, you will work in a dynamic and diverse environment requiring a number of key competencies:
- Analysis: You will be adept in reviewing and analysing technical information, consulting resources and documentation for clarity, make judgements and have the ability to think objectively and systematically.
- Communication and stakeholder engagement: Your ability to effectively communicate, build and sustain relationships and manage stakeholder engagement will be a key strength and critical to your success in the role.
- Writing and reporting: You will be someone who can write clearly, succinctly and correctly, structuring information and convincing through writing. Your attention to detail when presenting technical information and data in a clear and concise manner, will aid key decision-making.
- Apply expertise & technology: We are looking for people who can apply, develop & share their technical expertise, whilst also understanding other associated disciplines and how they relate to one another in the context of maintenance delivery.
- Learning & research: Ability to learn rapidly, gather and understand information quickly, and ensure an organisational learning approach.
- Following instructions & procedures: Working within the Defence environment, you will be someone who can follow procedures and instructions, showing a commitment to compliance with safety, policy and legislative requirements. You will have high attention to detail, along with a strong sense of self-management, the ability to manage tasks and prioritise appropriately.
