The Role
We are seeking a high performing, motivated and enthusiastic APS 6 Work, Health and Safety Officer to join the Regional Maintenance Centre North East (RMC-NE). This position offers an exciting opportunity to work with a team of experts across a unique work force consisting of Australian Public Servants, Defence Personnel and Industry Partners. In this role, you will contribute to ensuring services are delivered safely through the sustainment of Products being Supported (PbS) under the Maritime Sustainment Model (MSM).
You will be accountable under broad direction to perform and achieve complex work health and safety work. As the APS6 Work Health and Safety Officer, you will work independently with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and be accountable for the achievement of your work outcomes. You will exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures with a view to providing Governance and Assurance against WHSE policy and regulations.
About our Team
In response to the Australian Government developing a nationwide naval shipbuilding enterprise the MSM is being implemented to realise Plan Galileo; Maritime System Division’s national, long term approach to sustainment of the naval fleet.
The RMC-NE is located in Tropical North Queensland, Cairns and will provide capability support to the Royal Australian Navy from the Cairns maritime precinct. The focus of this organisation will be on enhanced collaboration, co-ordination, workforce development and expansion to build the capability and capacity needed to meet increasing ship maintenance demands.

You can access a variety of flexible working arrangements, occasionally working from home and working hours that are not always nine to five.
Our Ideal Candidate
- Undertake WHSE Governance and Assurance activities providing risk based assurance, verifications and inspections to RMC-NE and RMC Network discharge their WHS responsibilities.
- Researching and analysing activities to identify and address work health and safety risk to capability.
- Providing advice on the application of work health and safety legislation and Defence policies and procedures.
- Contributing to continuous improvement of work health and safety management systems in accordance with legislation and Defence policies.
- Being a team player and someone one who genuinely believes in collaborating both within and across organisational boundaries to achieve outcomes.
- You will have proven ability to prioritise, meet deadlines, work well autonomously and use initiative in a team environment to progress work tasking to the required outcome.
- Judgement and proven action in driving outcomes, including problem solving and flexibility.
- You will have good level of computing literacy including Microsoft Office Suite and relevant database programs.
