SMEC AI - the Small to Medium Enterprise Centre of Artificial Intelligence is a Federal Government funded program helping Australian businesses adopt AI. Operated by ventures programs business Boab AI, we deliver consultations, commercialisation programs and AI implementations that help businesses to scale.

We’re expanding our technical team and looking for a Full Stack Engineer who’s excited to work on AI agents and take technical ownership while leading a small developer team and staying hands-on with coding.

You will be working to develop internal tools and also consult to other businesses to solve their problems with AI. You’ll own technical delivery outcomes and have the freedom to manage your time and project portfolio. Note: Victorian-based applicants with full working rights only.

What You’ll Be Doing

Build and deploy AI agents using platforms such as Relevance AI, N8N, OpenAI, LangChain and others

Rapidly prototype and refine MVPs using cutting-edge AI development tools (e.g. agentic and vibe coding environments)

Develop and modify full-stack applications and tools powering SME businesses

Translate SME needs into working tools (lead generation, voice bots, marketing workflows etc.)

Provide leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to a small team of developers

Collaborate with a high-performance team to ship features and products

Tech Stack & Tools

We are working with technology stacks such as the below. You do not necessarily need experience in these, but it is a nice to have.

Frontend: React, TypeScript

Backend: Node.js, Python

AI: OpenAI API, LangChain, vector databases (e.g. Pinecone, ChromaDB)

Workflow Automation: N8N, Zapier, Make and other orchestration tools

DevOps: Docker, GitHub Actions, cloud platforms (GCP/AWS)

What We’re Looking For

3+ years of full stack development experience

Experience working with LLMs, AI agents, or automation tools

Ability to work independently and manage your portfolio without needing any micromanagement

Outcome-focused mindset; not wedded to specific stacks or rigid processes

Comfortable in a fast-moving, startup-style environment

Nice to Have

Familiarity with SME tools, digital marketing, or automation

Experience with agentic AI workflow tools such as Relevance AI, N8N or other similar tools

Salary range

$120,000 to $160,000 AUD inclusive of superannuation
