Role Overview

The Senior Project Engineer is responsible for leading the engineering, planning, and execution of electrical works for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. Acting as a key technical liaison between project stakeholders, subcontractors, and the delivery team, this role ensures all engineering deliverables are completed to the required standard, on time, and within budget..

Key Responsibilities:

Project Engineering & Technical Leadership

Oversee all electrical engineering activities related to BESS installation, including HV/LV power systems, inverters, transformers, switchgear, and control systems.

Coordinate and review design documentation, specifications, and drawings; ensure constructability and compliance with project requirements.

Lead technical reviews, RFIs, and change requests in collaboration with design consultants and the client.

Ensure compliance with all relevant Australian standards, grid codes, and electrical regulations.

Validate SCADA, protection, and communication system designs specific to BESS operations.

Project Delivery & Coordination

Support the Project Manager in planning, scheduling, and delivering project milestones.

Manage engineering deliverables and interface between internal teams, vendors, and subcontractors.

Provide detailed input into commissioning plans and oversee FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities.

Coordinate procurement and delivery of electrical equipment and materials, ensuring alignment with installation timelines.

Risk Management & Compliance

Identify and mitigate technical risks throughout the project lifecycle.

Ensure site activities adhere to QA/QC, WHS, and environmental compliance procedures.

Participate in and support HAZOPs, risk assessments, and constructability reviews.

Stakeholder & Communication Management

Serve as the main technical point of contact for the electrical scope with the client, consultants, and grid operators.

Lead coordination meetings and provide technical updates and reporting to senior management and stakeholders.

Key Requirements:

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)

CPEng or working toward preferred

Construction White Card

HV Switching Ticket (preferred)

Experience:

Minimum 6–8 years’ experience in project engineering within the electrical or energy sector

Demonstrated experience delivering large-scale renewable or infrastructure projects, with at least one BESS or substation project

Strong understanding of battery technology, inverters, grid integration, and protection systems

Skills:

Excellent knowledge of AS/NZS electrical standards and grid compliance (e.g., AEMO GPS)

Proficiency in reading and reviewing electrical schematics, SLDs, and layout drawings

Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills

Effective project planning, budgeting, and reporting capabilities

Desirable Attributes:

Prior experience with EPC or principal contractor delivery models

Familiarity with energy storage commissioning and EMS/SCADA integration

Strong problem-solving mindset and proactive attitude toward challenges
